About Dolls' Baptism

Every June 24th, the day of Saint John the Baptist, Barile relives one of the most unique rites of Arbëreshë culture: the Baptism of the Dolls (Puplet e Shenjanjet). The village girls, in traditional costume, "baptize" handmade dolls with ritual jumps and prayers in the Arbëreshë language, concluding with sweets and biscuits for everyone.

An Arbëreshë Rite Passed Down Since the 18th Century

Barile, in the heart of the Vulture region in the province of Potenza, is one of the Arbëreshë villages of Basilicata, a community of Albanian origin that has preserved its own language, rites, and traditions for centuries. Among these, the Baptism of the Dolls (in Arbëreshë, Puplet e Shenjanjet) stands out, a secular rite documented since 1730 and linked to June 24th, the day of the celebrations in honor of Saint John the Baptist.

The Girls' Rite

The absolute protagonists are the village girls, who wear the traditional Arbëreshë costume and pair up in the station square, Piazza Angelo Bozza. Each places her doll on the ground "as if it were a real newborn" and jumps three times reciting a secular prayer in the Arbëreshë dialect: it is a gesture of passage and community that symbolically seals the baptism.

Handmade Dolls

The dolls are specially made for the occasion: the head is made of rags, the face is painted, and the body is made from an iron ladle wrapped in bandages, dressed in small dresses and diapers. A humble and domestic artifact that encapsulates an entire cultural memory.

Atmosphere and Local Context

The rite concludes with the distribution of many biscuits for all participants, in a festive atmosphere that involves the entire community of Barile. In recent years, the tradition has also gained national television coverage, helping to make known one of the most authentic and poetic aspects of the Lucanian Arbëreshë heritage.

Dolls' Baptism — edition 2026

The Baptism of the Dolls returns to Barile on June 24, 2026, the day of Saint John the Baptist. Girls in traditional Arbëreshë costume "baptize" handmade dolls with the three ritual jumps and the prayer in Arbëreshë, in Piazza Angelo Bozza, before the distribution of biscuits to all participants.

In 2026, Barile renews the Arbëreshë rite of the Baptism of the Dolls on June 24th, the day of the celebrations for Saint John the Baptist. The ceremony takes place in the station square (Piazza Angelo Bozza), with the village girls as protagonists of the rite passed down since 1730.
