The traveling festival of Tuscia sweets on Epiphany Day
Dolci Assaggi della Tuscia is a traveling tourism and identity project that transforms the villages of the Viterbo province into a culinary trail dedicated to traditional pastry on Epiphany Day. The main event takes place in Bassano Romano, in the heart of the Tuscia region, within the monumental halls of Palazzo Giustiniani, where visitors can enjoy free tastings of sweets prepared in the area's historic bakeries.
The initiative was created to promote the confectionery heritage of Northern Lazio as a way to tell the story of the region's identity. The sweets offered for tasting are crafted in the historic bakeries of the villages along the Romea Strata, an ancient pilgrimage route, using raw materials supplied by local agricultural cooperatives. This creates a supply chain that links agricultural production, artisanal processing, and cultural memory.
Several municipalities in the Tuscia region participate in the project, including Acquapendente, Montefiascone, Latera, Vetralla, Viterbo, Capranica, and Sutri, in addition to Bassano Romano, which serves as the creator and main venue. Each village contributes its own specialties, offering a mosaic of flavors that reflects the gastronomic variety of the Viterbo province.
The Epiphany festivities begin in the morning with free sweet tastings in the setting of Palazzo Giustiniani, accompanied by local tour guides and merchants who share the history and recipes of the region. For those with a sweet tooth and for children, chocolate fountains and cookie distributions are set up. Throughout the event, there are also performances featuring Renaissance dances, music, and arts, in harmony with the atmosphere of the historic palace.
In the afternoon, the celebration continues with the children's show «Pinocchio Tutto da Ridere», designed to engage families and end the Befana holiday on a high note.
Located in the province of Viterbo, in the Lazio region, Bassano Romano is a village best known for Palazzo and Villa Giustiniani, with their fresco cycles and monumental gardens. Hosting Dolci Assaggi della Tuscia here means combining the architectural prestige of the site with enogastronomic tradition, offering visitors an experience that blends culture, landscape, and flavors. The event is supported by the Autonomous Institute of Monumental Villas of Lazio, the European Association Romea Strata, the DMO Borghi Etruschi, and the local Pro Loco.
The second edition of Dolci Assaggi della Tuscia confirmed the formula of the traveling tourism and identity project created to promote the traditional pastry of Northern Lazio. In Bassano Romano, the event was held at Palazzo Giustiniani, with a free tasting of sweets prepared in the historic bakeries of the Viterbo province villages along the Romea Strata route.
The day began in the morning with the opening of the tastings and chocolate fountains dedicated to children, continuing in the afternoon with the show «Pinocchio Tutto da Ridere». Several Tuscia municipalities participated in the initiative, including Acquapendente, Montefiascone, Latera, Vetralla, Viterbo, Capranica, and Sutri.
