The village in the Alto Vastese region transforms into a little Bethlehem, blending faith, tradition, and ancient crafts.
In the heart of the Abruzzo winter, the small village of Dogliola, in the province of Chieti, transforms into a little Bethlehem. The Dogliola Living Nativity is a re-enactment of the Nativity that brings the streets of the historic center to life with costumed actors, scenes inspired by the Gospel, and a reconstruction of daily life from the past. Soft lighting, sounds, and scents recreate the atmosphere of Christmas long ago, along an immersive path that winds through the stone alleys and quiet squares of the village.
The itinerary unfolds along approximately forty stations, curated down to the smallest detail, which reproduce ancient crafts and scenes of rural life in the Abruzzo hinterland. Between one alley and another, visitors encounter artisans at work, reconstructed workshops, and moments of conviviality, in a setting that weaves together a religious dimension and the celebration of local roots.
The Living Nativity is also a journey through the flavors of Abruzzo tradition. Along the path, you can taste typical products prepared by local families and association volunteers: vino cotto (cooked wine) and new wine, chickpeas and bean soup, layered pizza and pizza scima, ferratelle (waffle cookies) and milk biscuits, bread with crushed pepper, ricotta and fresh cheese, fried peppers with eggs, and scrippelle. A rich taste of the peasant cuisine of this corner of Abruzzo.
Organized by the Associazione Dogliola in Fiore – Cinque Petali APS, the Living Nativity is not just a religious occasion, but a moment of strong collective identity capable of uniting community, tradition, and hospitality. The event, now in its early editions, has seen attendance well beyond expectations over the years, with visitors coming from neighboring towns in the Vastese area.
Situated at an altitude of about 445 meters, overlooking the Trigno valley and just a few kilometers from Vasto, Dogliola is one of the smallest villages in the province of Chieti. Its historic center, with the compact layout typical of Abruzzo hill towns, paved alleys, and stone houses, provides the natural and authentic backdrop for this Christmas re-enactment, which restores the magic of Christmas past to its visitors.
