Saint Benedict and Subiaco, a thousand-year bond
Subiaco is inextricably linked to the figure of Saint Benedict of Nursia, the founder of Western monasticism, who lived as a hermit in this valley in the cave of the Sacro Speco and founded his first monasteries here. Every year, around March 21st — the day of the Saint's passing in 547 — the city dedicates the "Days of Saint Benedict" to him, a series of Benedictine celebrations that weave together liturgy, culture, and popular festivities. Saint Benedict, proclaimed patron saint of Europe by Pope Paul VI in 1964, is also the religious patron of Subiaco, and his feast day is the most heartfelt identity-defining moment of the year for the local community.
The "Pro Pace et Europa Una" Benedictine Torch
The symbolic heart of the celebrations is the Benedictine Torch, lit every year under the motto "Pro Pace et Europa Una" (For Peace and a United Europe). The torch unites the three Benedictine cities — Norcia, the Saint's birthplace; Subiaco, the cradle of his monasticism; and Cassino, where he rests at Montecassino — and often travels to a European capital, carrying a message of peace and unity for the continent. Its arrival in Subiaco, welcomed by the lighting of the "Light of Benedict," opens the most intense phase of the festival, which culminates on the evening of March 21st with the lighting of the tripod in the presence of religious, civil, and diplomatic authorities.
Liturgies, exhibitions, and Benedictine culture
The program alternates between religious moments and cultural events. Liturgical celebrations take place between the Basilica of Sant'Andrea Apostolo, the monastery of Santa Scolastica, and the Sacro Speco, featuring an evocative evening procession along the Via dei Monasteri accompanied by the town band. In recent years, the Benedictine days have also hosted exhibitions of extraordinary value: in 2026, the monastery of Santa Scolastica — where Italy's first printing press was born in the 15th century — displayed the Gutenberg Bible and Cicero's De Oratore.
The March 21st procession and the market fair
March 21st is the highlight: in the morning, the market fair brings the streets of the town to life with stalls and handicrafts, as is the secular tradition for patronal feasts. In the afternoon, the procession of the Patron Saint winds through the city streets with the statue of Saint Benedict, followed by the mayors of the Aniene Valley municipalities, the gonfalons, and delegations from twin cities, including the German town of Ochsenhausen. After the solemn mass presided over by the bishop, the "Comunitas Sublacensis" historical pageant in period costume parades through the streets, and the day concludes with the arrival of the torch, the lighting of the tripod, and a fireworks display.
A festival of faith, history, and community
More than just a simple patronal feast, the "Days of Saint Benedict" are an event of European significance that has received support from national and EU institutions and the blessing of the popes over the years. At the same time, it remains a deeply popular festival, where the community of Subiaco — musical bands, sports associations, confraternities, and schools — gathers around its patron saint in the spirit of "ora et labora."
Subiaco, the Aniene Valley, and Lazio
Organized by the Municipality of Subiaco together with the monastic community and the diocese of Tivoli and Palestrina, the celebrations are also an opportunity to discover one of the most fascinating villages in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital: the Rocca dei Borgia, the medieval bridge of San Francesco, the waters of the Aniene, and, above all, the Benedictine monasteries that are candidates for World Heritage status. For the Lazio Region, which promotes the event in its tourist calendar, the days of Saint Benedict are one of the most significant religious and cultural appointments of the year.
Days of Saint Benedict — edition 2026
From March 11th to 21st, 2026, Subiaco celebrated its patron saint with a particularly rich edition of the "Days of Saint Benedict." On Sunday, March 15th, the "Pro Pace et Europa Una" Benedictine Torch was welcomed in the city with the lighting of the "Light of Benedict," a sign of the Saint's presence in the life of the community.
On Friday, March 20th, the day of the Saint's passing, the Santa Scolastica Basilica hosted the inaugural ceremony for the exhibition of the Gutenberg Bible and Cicero's De Oratore; in the afternoon, the procession climbed from Piazza Sant'Andrea towards the Sacro Speco, where Cardinal Angelo De Donatis presided over the Eucharist with the crowning of the Saint's statue and the mayor's prayer. In the evening, the torchlight procession along the Via dei Monasteri, accompanied by the "Casa della Musica Città di Subiaco" band, led the faithful back to the Basilica of Sant'Andrea Apostolo.
On Saturday, March 21st, the festival reached its climax: in the morning, the traditional market fair, in the afternoon, Vespers, and at 4:30 PM, the procession of the Patron Saint with the mayors of the Aniene Valley and the delegation from the twin city of Ochsenhausen. After the solemn mass presided over by Bishop Mauro Parmeggiani, the "Comunitas Sublacensis" historical pageant and the gonfalons paraded towards Piazza della Resistenza, where at 7:30 PM the arrival of the Benedictine Torch and the lighting of the tripod, followed by a fireworks display, concluded the celebrations.

How to get there
Subiaco is located about 70 km from Rome. By car: A24 Rome–L'Aquila motorway, exit at Vicovaro-Mandela, then take the SR411 Sublacense road to Subiaco. By bus: Cotral lines from Rome Ponte Mammolo (Metro B). The celebrations take place in the historic center and at the monasteries of Santa Scolastica and the Sacro Speco, which can be reached by car or on foot along the Via dei Monasteri.
Admission
All events — liturgies, processions, the market fair, the historical pageant, and the lighting of the tripod — are free and open to the public.
Tips
On March 21st, the center is very busy and traffic is diverted for the procession: it is advisable to arrive early. In March, evenings in the valley are cool: warm clothing is recommended for the torchlight procession and the lighting of the tripod.
