The anti-fascist April 25th in the Pigneto district, across streets, squares, and gardens
In Rome, in the heart of the Pigneto district, the Liberation anniversary is not just an institutional ceremony: it becomes a widespread popular festival that takes over streets, squares, gardens, and courtyards. Days of Liberation - Pigneto Festival was born in 2004 and reached its twenty-third edition in 2026, confirming itself as one of the most attended anti-fascist events in the capital and the entire Lazio region.
The event is entirely self-financed and self-organized by the Quellə del 25 Aprile collective, without commercial sponsors: those who perform, cook, or set up the stages do so on a voluntary basis. This choice gives the festival its most recognizable character: an event built from the ground up by local residents alongside committees, associations, social centers, and cultural entities of the 5th Municipality.
The hub of the festival is Piazza Nuccitelli Persiani, on Via Mariano da Sarno, with gardens named after two anti-fascist residents of the district who were deported to Mauthausen in 1944. This is no secondary detail: the street names tell the story of the resistance memory of this part of Rome, which during the Nazi-fascist occupation was the scene of roundups and a dense clandestine network. Around the square, the festival expands to the streets of Pigneto, the Campetto Pigneto Team, the Casa del Popolo, the CSOA eXSnia, and other spaces that host book presentations, screenings, and exhibitions in the preceding weeks.
The program is typically spread over two days, April 24th and 25th, preceded by a long lead-up of cultural initiatives. On the evening of the 24th, the five-a-side football tournament, the anti-fascist procession through the district streets, and the traditional anti-fascist pasta meal take place, followed by shows and concerts. On April 25th, the day begins early with breakfast in the square and departure for the procession at Piazza delle Camelie, continuing until midnight.
Pigneto is one of the most characteristic districts of the Municipality of Rome: born as a working-class neighborhood between the railway and Via Prenestina, made famous by the cinema of Pier Paolo Pasolini, today it is a district where the popular soul coexists with bars, workshops, and independent cultural spaces. For a visitor arriving in Lazio in spring, Days of Liberation is the chance to see Rome from an angle far from tourist circuits: no monuments, but a community telling its story through its own history.
The organizers have been focusing on the sustainability of the event for years, with attention to low environmental impact, waste reduction, and the accessibility of the spaces, which are wheelchair-friendly. On April 25th, vehicle traffic is prohibited in the streets involved in the festival from 8 AM until midnight: the neighborhood is returned to pedestrians for the entire day.
More than a music festival, Days of Liberation is a civic and convivial ritual. People eat together in the street, discuss, dance, and bring a voluntary contribution. First-time visitors will find a familiar and informal atmosphere, where the memory of the Resistance intertwines with the daily life of a neighborhood that has made participation its hallmark.
After a long lead-up of presentations, screenings, and exhibitions hosted since April 8th in spaces like CSOA eXSnia, the Casa del Popolo, and Vivèro, the festival came to life on April 24th and 25th, 2026, in the Giardini Persiani-Nuccitelli, at Piazza Nuccitelli Persiani. As always, the event was self-financed and self-organized by the Quellə del 25 Aprile collective, without sponsors, with free entry and voluntary contributions.
On April 25th, the neighborhood streets were closed to vehicle traffic from 8 AM to midnight, returning the entire district to pedestrians for a day of music, debates, games, and conviviality.
Pigneto is served by the Pigneto Metro C station and the Pigneto railway stop (FL lines); numerous bus lines and the 5/14 tram stop along Via Prenestina and the Circonvallazione Casilina. From Rome Termini, it can be reached in about 15-20 minutes by public transport. Driving is not recommended: on April 25th, traffic is prohibited in the festival streets from 8 AM to midnight.
Completely free entry. The event is self-financed: food and drinks are offered at popular prices, and you can support the event with a voluntary contribution or by participating in the solidarity auction.
Bring a water bottle and reusable tableware (the event aims for low environmental impact), arrive in the afternoon to enjoy the market and children's activities, and stay in the evening for the concerts. The main spaces are wheelchair accessible.
