Foligno celebrates Dante, city of the first printed Divine Comedy
The Dante Days celebrate the unique bond between Foligno (Province of Perugia) and Dante Alighieri: in the Umbrian city, on April 11, 1472, the first printed edition of the Divine Comedy saw the light, a foundational moment in the history of publishing. From this primacy, an event is born that every spring transforms the historic center into a laboratory of Dantean culture.
The program includes a Dantean reading marathon, lectures by illustrious Dante scholars and medievalists, immersive videomapping installations at Palazzo Trinci, ancient music concerts, workshops on medieval cuisine and fashion, and competitions for schools. The publishing fair «Pagine a corte» brings together publishers and enthusiasts in the monumental spaces of the palace.
Organized by the Municipality of Foligno with the Dante Committee and the municipal library «Dante Alighieri», the event combines the depth of literary tradition with openness to contemporary art, featuring international guests invited to reinterpret the Dantean universe. An opportunity to rediscover Dante and Foligno's role in the history of the book, in the heart of Umbria.
Dante Days 2026 take place from April 8 to 12 in Foligno, with the main venue at Palazzo Trinci. The theme of this edition is the 11th canto of Paradise, dedicated to Saint Francis, marking the 800th anniversary of the saint's death, a figure deeply connected to the Umbrian region.
The edition is preceded on March 25 (Dantedì) by a meeting with Cuban artist Carlos Garaicoa on contemporary interpretations of Dante's work. The program includes a reading marathon of Paradise, lectures by Dante scholars and medievalists, the immersive videomapping installation «Nocte» at Palazzo Trinci, workshops on medieval cuisine and fashion, competitions for schools, ancient music concerts with the Cantoria Mevaniae, and the publishing fair «Pagine a corte» (April 10-12).
