About Hispellum

Hispellum is the grand historical re-enactment that every summer brings Spello, in the province of Perugia, back to the era of the ancient Colonia Iulia Hispellum. Set in the Roman sites of the village—from the amphitheatre to the Villa dei Mosaici, from the Augustan walls to Villa Fidelia—the event features costumed processions and parades, games, a Roman market, educational workshops, shows, and banquets, in a journey into the daily life and rituals of ancient Rome. Organised by the HISPELLVM APS Association.

A Journey into Ancient Hispellum

Hispellum is the historical re-enactment that every summer transforms Spello, in the province of Perugia, into an ancient Roman city. The event celebrates the glorious past of the village, the ancient Colonia Iulia Hispellum of the Augustan and Constantinian periods, bringing back to life atmospheres, rituals, and costumes from two thousand years ago through an immersive experience in the heart of the historic centre.

Among Spello's Roman Sites

The charm of the event stems from the locations that host it: Spello's Roman sites, from the amphitheatre to the ancient aqueduct, from the Augustan walls to the Forum, from the Villa dei Mosaici to Villa Fidelia. In this setting, costumed parades and processions, gladiatorial games, agones, the Roman market, educational workshops, guided tours, and banquets inspired by the tables of the ancient Romans take place.

Culture and Entertainment

Organised by the HISPELLVM APS Association, the re-enactment structures its programme into thematic areas dedicated to Roman life, education, entertainment, historical gastronomy, and cultural insights with its scientific committee. Among Umbria's most anticipated Roman re-enactments, Hispellum combines historical accuracy, education, and entertainment for audiences of all ages.
