Spello returns to Roman times: the re-enactment of the ancient Colonia Iulia Hispellum with games, pageants, and markets
Hispellum is the historical re-enactment that transforms Spello, in the province of Perugia, into an ancient Roman city every summer. The event celebrates the glorious past of the village, the ancient Colonia Iulia Hispellum of the Augustan and Constantinian periods, bringing back to life atmospheres, rituals, and customs from two thousand years ago through an immersive experience in the heart of the historic centre.
The charm of the event stems from the locations that host it: Spello's Roman sites, from the amphitheatre to the ancient aqueduct, from the Augustan walls to the Forum, from the Villa of the Mosaics to Villa Fidelia. Within this setting, costumed pageants and processions, gladiatorial games, agones, the Roman market, educational workshops, guided tours, and banquets inspired by the tables of ancient Romans take place.
Organised by the HISPELLVM APS Association, the re-enactment structures its programme into thematic areas dedicated to Roman life, education, shows, historical gastronomy, and cultural insights with its scientific committee. Among the most anticipated Roman re-enactments in Umbria, Hispellum combines historical accuracy, education, and entertainment for an audience of all ages.
The 2026 edition of Hispellum is scheduled from August 27 to 30 in Spello, with a theme dedicated to "Memory and actuality in the sustainable use of Mother Earth's resources". The event offers a journey back to ancient Hispellvm, divided into thematic areas: "A Glimpse of Romanity" with rituals, pageants, and processions; "A Day as an Ancient Roman" with experiences, workshops, and education; "Pleasures of the Soul" with shows, challenges, and entertainment; "A Table with History" with banquets; "The History of Hispellvm" with presentations by the scientific committee; and "Retracing History" with conferences, exhibitions, and excursions.
The programme, organised by the HISPELLVM APS Association, is divided into six thematic areas:
