The medieval historical re-enactment of the Captain of the Mountain's village
Cutigliano Medievale is the grand historical re-enactment that transforms the village of Cutigliano—a district of the Abetone Cutigliano municipality in the province of Pistoia—into an authentic medieval settlement every summer. For a weekend in July, the paved streets, small squares, and picturesque corners of the historic center are filled with ladies and knights, merchants and artisans, soldiers and commoners, transporting visitors back to the atmosphere of the Tuscan mountains from centuries ago.
The event is deeply rooted in the past of Cutigliano, which in the 14th century served as the seat of the Capitano della Montagna, the official sent by Florence to govern the Pistoia Mountain territory. The palace that once housed his headquarters is now the village town hall. Established in 2001 by the local festival committee (now the Pro Loco), the re-enactment celebrates this historical identity and has become a landmark event for medieval enthusiasts in Tuscany.
The program brings the village to life from morning until late at night with a succession of medieval scenes:
Cutigliano is one of the most beautiful villages in the Pistoia Apennines, nestled in the woods just a few kilometers from the Abetone ski slopes. During the re-enactment, the architectural charm of the town—with its narrow alleys, coats of arms, and the loggia of the Palazzo dei Capitani—serves as a natural stage for the event. The festival is entirely managed by the Pro Loco Cutigliano with the patronage of the municipal administration, offering a perfect opportunity to discover the culture, history, and hospitality of this corner of Tuscany.
The 25th edition of Cutigliano Medievale takes place from Friday, July 17th to Sunday, July 19th, 2026, in the village of Cutigliano (Abetone Cutigliano, PT). This is a significant milestone for the historical re-enactment organized by the Pro Loco Cutigliano, which has been bringing the medieval atmosphere of the Captain of the Mountain's village to life for twenty-five years.
As per tradition, the three days will alternate between costumed historical pageants, traveler's taverns and inns, artisan stalls along the streets of the center, military encampments, and roving performances by drummers, flag-throwers, and musicians. The complete program with times, tavern menus, and show details will be announced by the Pro Loco Cutigliano on official channels in the weeks preceding the event.
Cutigliano can be reached by car via the SS66 and the roads of the Pistoia Mountains; it is about an hour's drive from Pistoia. The nearest train station is in Pistoia, which connects to the mountains via local bus lines. The nearest airport is Florence-Peretola.
Admission to the village for the event is generally free; the taverns and the medieval dinner require payment for food, often by reservation. We recommend checking schedules and menus on the official Pro Loco Cutigliano channels.
Wear comfortable shoes for the cobblestone streets of the center. In the mountains, evenings can be cool even in July: bring a light jacket.
