A weekend of art, devotion, and traditional trades leading up to the feast of Saint Agatha in Catania
Craftsmanship, Faith and Identity is the event that brings the Plaia district of Catania to life in preparation for the feast of its patron saint, Saint Agatha, the core of the city's religious and civic identity. Hosted at the Church of S.S. Maria Assunta alla Plaia, the event gathers artisans, artists, and citizens for an entire weekend, weaving together popular devotion, artistic trades, and local culture.
The common thread of the festival is the work of artisans, guardians of traditions that go beyond mere material production and are passed down from generation to generation. During these days, the community can admire the devotional symbols linked to the feast of Saint Agatha, in particular the Candelora of the Master Artisans and the Cereo of the Master Artisans, which has been recently restored. The cerei (or candelore) are the large votive candles that parade through the city center during the Feast of Saint Agatha: the one belonging to the Master Artisans represents the traditional guilds and trades of Catania.
The schedule offers an explosion of art and tradition spread over three days:
The event was born in the context of the 2026 Agatine Jubilee, the year celebrating the 9th centenary of the return of Saint Agatha's relics to the Cathedral of Catania. Within this framework, Craftsmanship, Faith and Identity promotes the deep bond between Sicilian craftsmanship, faith, and the cultural identity of the Municipality of Catania, in the Sicily Region. More than just an exhibition, it is an opportunity to rediscover artistic trades as a living heritage of the community and to experience the anticipation of the city's most heartfelt festival together.
From January 16th to 18th, 2026, the Church of S.S. Maria Assunta alla Plaia in Catania hosted three days dedicated to craftsmanship, faith, and local identity, in preparation for the feast of Saint Agatha and during the year of the Agatine Jubilee.
Friday (4:30 PM - 10:30 PM) opened with the artisan market, paintings and photographs by local artists, sacred-themed garments, and evening popular storytelling. Saturday (10:00 AM - 10:30 PM) offered activities for children, including creative face painting and wooden game workshops, as well as a band concert and the fashion show dedicated to Saint Agatha. Sunday (10:00 AM - 10:00 PM) featured a new fashion show and the conference "The light of Saint Agatha in everyday life."
The symbolic heart of the event was the display of the Candelora and the Cereo of the Master Artisans, which has been recently restored.
