Running the Karst in Winter

The Corsa della Bora – S1 Trail is the most important trail running event in the Trieste area: every year, around Epiphany, it attracts thousands of runners from dozens of countries to the Karst. It takes its name from Trieste's most famous wind, the Bora, which blows fiercely over these limestone plateaus overlooking the Adriatic, and is based in the resort of Portopiccolo, in Sistiana, within the municipality of Duino-Aurisina.

A Race for Every Runner

The event's strength lies in its variety of distances, from the shortest and most accessible to the extreme ultras: it ranges from a few kilometers designed for families and beginners to ultra-races exceeding 100 km, traversing the trails of the Italian and Slovenian Karst. The routes are renewed each year, offering regular participants new challenges and ever-changing scenery.

An International Event

Over the years, the Corsa della Bora has grown to international significance, with thousands of participants from numerous countries. Organized by the Municipality of Trieste with the SentieroUNO Association, it is part of the S1 Trail circuit and represents for many the opportunity to kick off the trail season in a unique setting, where the Karst stone, forests, and sea merge.

Running in the Karst means crossing a stark and fascinating landscape: sinkholes, dry stone walls, karst scrubland, forests, and breathtaking views of the Gulf of Trieste. Even for those not competing, the Corsa della Bora is an opportunity to discover this border region between Italy and Slovenia, rich in nature and history.
