About Corpus Domini Vallata

The Corpus Domini Procession is one of the most heartfelt events in the religious calendar of Vallata, a town in the high Irpinia area of the Avellino province. On the day of the solemnity, the archpriest carries the monstrance under a canopy held by four people, preceded by children dressed in white; the village streets are covered in broom and rose petals arranged into hearts and crosses, while sheets, blankets, and drapes hang from the balconies. A day when the entire community gathers along the streets of the historic center.

An ancient solemnity in the heart of high Irpinia

The Corpus Domini Procession is one of the most well-attended traditions in the religious calendar of Vallata, a small town of just under 2,400 inhabitants perched at an altitude of about 870 meters between the Ufita and Calaggio valleys, in the province of Avellino, in Campania. Here, as in much of inland Irpinia, the Eucharistic solemnity is not just a liturgical moment: it is a day when the entire community leaves their homes, prepares the streets, and accompanies the Blessed Sacrament along the town center.

The rite: the monstrance under the canopy

The heart of the day is the procession that follows the solemn mass. The archpriest carries the monstrance containing the Blessed Sacrament, sheltered by a canopy held by four people; in front of him, children dressed in white walk in two rows on either side of the street. Several small altars are set up along the route, where the procession stops for blessings: these are the stations that mark the journey through the village and involve the different neighborhoods in turn.

Broom petals, hearts, and crosses on the pavement

The most recognizable element of the day is the floral decoration. In the hours leading up to the procession, the locals gather and pluck broom and rose petalsโ€”flowers that abound on the hills around the village in Juneโ€”and arrange them on the street to form hearts, crosses, and other religious symbols. Some of the petals are kept in baskets by the children, who scatter them as the Blessed Sacrament passes. From the balconies and windows, sheets, embroidered blankets, and drapes are hung: an ancient custom that completely transforms the look of the streets for a few hours.

A community that gathers

Like many festivals in inland Irpinia, Corpus Domini in Vallata is not just about devotion: the preparation of the small altars and flower carpets involves families, neighbors, and parish groups, and the passage of the procession in front of every house is experienced as a personal, as well as collective, moment. First-time visitors are struck by the contrast between the hushed silence accompanying the monstrance and the vibrant colors of the petals and drapes.

The mother church and the historic center

The community's focal point is the mother church of San Bartolomeo Apostolo, of medieval origin, with three naves, which houses a painting attributed to Lanfranco. The procession route touches the main streets of the town, where the church of San Vito, in the historic center, and the church of San Rocco, built starting in the late 17th century as a vow against the plague, are also located. Vallata belongs to the diocese of Ariano Irpino-Lacedonia.

Corpus Domini in the Vallata festival calendar

The procession is part of a particularly rich religious calendar. Among the most followed traditions in the Municipality of Vallata are:

  • Maria Santissima Incoronata, the last Saturday of April;
  • the pilgrimage to the Mattinella sanctuary, the last Saturday of May, involving a walk of about fifteen kilometers;
  • Saint Anthony of Padua on June 13th and Saint Vitus on June 14th and 15th, with the characteristic Procession of the Panelle, small loaves of bread brought to the chapel of Saint Vitus for blessing;
  • the Madonna del Carmine on July 16th and Saint Roch on August 16th;
  • the patronal feast of Saint Bartholomew, on August 24th, with a procession and evening shows;
  • the famous rite of Good Friday, one of the oldest in Southern Italy, which has been renewed uninterruptedly since 1541.

When it is celebrated

The date changes every year because the solemnity of Corpus Domini depends on the Easter calendar: in Italy, it is celebrated on the Sunday following the Most Holy Trinity. In 2026, the procession took place on Sunday, June 7th, while in 2025 it fell on Sunday, June 22nd. Those wishing to attend must therefore check the date and times announced by the parish each year.

Why it is worth the trip

Vallata is not a mass tourism destination, and for this very reason, its Corpus Domini procession retains an authentic character, far from re-enactments built for the public. It is an opportunity to discover a village in high Irpinia, its views over the Campanian Apennines, and a popular tradition passed down for generations.

Corpus Domini Vallata โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Corpus Domini Procession took place in Vallata on Sunday, June 7th. As per tradition, the archpriest carried the monstrance under the canopy along the streets of the center, amidst the small altars set up in the neighborhoods, children dressed in white arranged in two rows, and carpets of broom and rose petals laid on the road. The day is documented by a photo gallery and a video published on the local website vallata.org.

Corpus Domini 2026 in Vallata

In 2026, the solemnity of Corpus Domini fell on Sunday, June 7th, and Vallata renewed its Eucharistic procession through the streets of the town, in the province of Avellino. The Blessed Sacrament was carried in a monstrance by the archpriest under a canopy held by four people, preceded by children dressed in white.

Along the route, as every year, small altars were set up, before which the procession stopped for blessings. The streets were prepared with broom and rose petals arranged to form hearts, crosses, and other religious symbols, while sheets, blankets, and drapes hung from the balconies of the houses.

The 2026 procession was documented by a gallery of over thirty photographs and a video published on the local website vallata.org, curated by Giovanni Nufrio and Carmine Palmisano.
