A religious tradition in the heart of the Dolomites

The Corpus Domini procession is one of the most solemn and identity-defining events in the calendar of Ortisei (known as St. Ulrich in German and Urtijëi in Ladin), the main town of Val Gardena, in the province of Bolzano, in the heart of the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Celebrated on the Sunday following the liturgical solemnity of Corpus Domini, the festival blends the deep Eucharistic devotion of the Ladin community with the extraordinary beauty of traditional Val Gardena costumes, set against the unique backdrop of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The parade and solemn Mass

The morning begins early with a parade of groups in traditional attire and the local brass band, departing from Piazza Sant'Antonio and walking through the town's pedestrian area to the parish church of St. Ulrich. Here, a solemn Mass is celebrated, serving as the highlight of the day. Following the service, the procession begins: the Blessed Sacrament is carried through the streets of the center, with stops for blessings at altars set up for the occasion.

Val Gardena costumes

The visual heart of the event is the traditional Val Gardena costume, worn by members of the Val Gardena Costume Association (in Ladin, Lia Guanc dala Gherdëina). Considered among the most elaborate and interesting in the entire Alpine arc, these garments are showcased primarily during religious processions and major traditional festivals. Rare and highly valuable pieces of these costumes are preserved and displayed at the Museum de Gherdëina (Cësa di Ladins) in Ortisei.

The Corpus Domini procession is more than just a religious event: it is a moment when the entire community of Ortisei gathers to celebrate its Ladin roots, language, faith, and traditions passed down through generations.
