The procession beneath a ceiling of laburnum garlands in the heart of the Upper Tanaro Valley
The Corpus Domini Celebrations are the flagship event of Ormea, a town in the Upper Tanaro Valley in the province of Cuneo, Piedmont. This festival is deeply rooted in the village's identity, drawing locals and visitors alike for days of tradition, music, entertainment, and devotion, all with free admission.
The highlight that makes this festival truly unique is the ancient procession held beneath a ceiling of laburnum garlands. Residents of Via Roma, the town's main street, work alongside volunteers to patiently weave the yellow laburnum flowers into long garlands. These are then suspended from the upper floors of the houses along the entire street, forming a literal floral roof that scents and colors the most picturesque corners of the historic center.
Preparing the garlands is a ritual that unites generations: for two afternoons, the alleys come alive with the patient work of hands crafting these botanical decorations, which are then displayed throughout the day on the eve of the main event.
The religious heart of the festivities is the Solemn Holy Mass celebrated in the Church of San Martino on Via Roma, followed by the evocative procession through the village streets under the flowery canopy. Alongside the liturgical moments, the festival offers a more convivial side: the "Party under the fireworks" evening, hosted by the Pro Loco with music and an outdoor bar, culminates in a highly anticipated fireworks display that lights up the sky over Ormea. The Alta Val Tanaro Band concert in Piazza San Martino, which has accompanied the celebrations for decades, is also a staple of the event.
Ormea is one of the most characteristic villages in the Upper Tanaro Valley, nestled between the Ligurian and Maritime Alps. Attending the Corpus Domini is a perfect opportunity to explore its medieval alleys, ancient porticoes, and experience the hospitality of a mountain community that proudly preserves its roots. The festival is organized by the Municipality of Ormea in collaboration with the Pro Loco, with the invaluable contribution of local volunteers.
From June 4th to 8th, 2026, Ormea celebrated its most important festival. The afternoons of Thursday, June 4th and Friday, June 5th were dedicated to preparing the traditional laburnum garlands, which were then displayed along Via Roma from Friday afternoon throughout the day on Saturday. On Saturday evening, the Pro Loco hosted the "Party under the fireworks," which culminated in a pyrotechnic show. Sunday, June 7th marked the central moment, with the Solemn Holy Mass and the procession under the flowery garlands, followed in the afternoon by the band concert in Piazza San Martino.
Ormea is located in the Upper Tanaro Valley, in the far south of the Cuneo province. By car, it can be reached via the SS28 road from Ceva (A6 Turin-Savona motorway exit) in the direction of Colle di Nava. By train, it is served by the Ceva-Ormea line (Ormea station), which is seasonally reactivated for tourist services.
The heart of the festival is the historic center, specifically Via Roma (home to the garlands and the Church of San Martino) and Piazza San Martino, where the band concerts are held.
All events are free of charge.
