The Renaissance historical re-enactment of the Este Duchy in the heart of Copparo
The Palio di Copparo is one of the most cherished historical re-enactments in the Province of Ferrara. For about two weeks in June, the town in Emilia-Romagna sheds its present-day guise and rediscovers the atmosphere of the Renaissance, when its territory was part of the Este Duchy. The banners with the colours of the four districts hanging from the balcony of the Municipal Residence and the flags fluttering between Piazza della Libertà and Piazza del Popolo announce the start of the event, which in 2026 reached its 47th edition.
The re-enactment refers to the period between 1500 and 1539, when Copparo was under the rule of the Este family. In particular, the Palio evokes the visits of Duke Ercole II, who would come to the Este Delizia in Copparo to dedicate himself to hunting. The first edition dates back to 1934, but due to organizational and economic difficulties, the event only resumed permanently in 1977, the year from which the current numbering of editions is counted.
The heart of the competition lies with Copparo's four historic districts, which animate the entire village with their friendly rivalry:
Each district presents its emblems and coats of arms to the Duke, parading in costume from their headquarters to the square set up as an Este Court. The districts compete in skill tests, historical games, and costume theatrical performances.
Among the most anticipated moments are the theatrical performances inspired by the shows actually staged at the Este court, which re-enact contemporary or classical literary works, mythological episodes, and historical events of the region. The best performance wins the Cosetta Coluccia Prize. In the 2026 edition, the award went to the Furnas district, for a performance dedicated to Nicolaus Copernicus and the heliocentric system.
The programme alternates solemn and festive moments: the official opening with a religious celebration, the handover of the City Keys to the Duke, the blessing of the banners, and the oath of the Captains; the grand historical parade of the districts; the Renaissance dinners such as "Dinner at the Duke's Court"; the Children's Palio; and ancient street games with the pole of cuccagna (greased pole) and the awarding of the Palio to the winning district. Armourers, falconers, archers, dancers, musicians, flag-wavers, and fire shows complete the atmosphere in the squares of the Municipality of Copparo.
Promoted and organized by the Association of Copparo Districts, with the patronage of the Municipality of Copparo, the Parish of Saints Peter and Paul, and the Pro Loco, the Palio involves the entire community, including local schools in the creation of the district banners. It is today one of the historical re-enactment events that best tell the story of the Este heritage in the lower Ferrara region.
The 2026 edition of the Palio di Copparo enlivened the town centre from June 1 to 14 with a programme full of historical and popular events, promoted by the Association of Copparo Districts.
Among the highlights: the opening on June 1st with a religious celebration, the handover of the City Keys, the blessing of the banners, and the oath of the Captains; the historical parade of the four districts on June 2nd; the "Dinner at the Duke's Court"; the Children's Palio; and the historical-theatrical performances with the Cosetta Coluccia Prize, won by the Furnas district for a performance on Nicolaus Copernicus. The novelty of the year was the events on June 13th and 14th held in the "Giardini del Duca" (Duke's Gardens), with ancient games, performances by musicians and flag-wavers, falconers, archers, and fire shows.
Copparo is located in the lower Ferrara region, about 20 km northeast of Ferrara. By car: from the A13 Bologna-Padova motorway, exit at Ferrara Nord, then follow signs for Copparo. The main events are held in the historic centre, between Piazza del Popolo and Piazza della Libertà, in front of the Municipal Residence. In 2026, some events on the final weekend took place in the "Giardini del Duca" (Duke's Gardens).
Parades, processions, and street games are free to attend. Renaissance dinners and some convivial events require booking and payment: information at the district headquarters and the Association of Copparo Districts.
