A classic of youth cycling in memory of the Resistance, on the Carso of Gorizia
On April 25th, while Italy celebrates Liberation Day, one of the most anticipated races on the youth cycling calendar takes place on the roads of the Carso of Gorizia: the Coppa Montes – Gran Premio della Resistenza. Now in its seventy-first edition, it is one of the most prestigious and long-standing Junior competitions in the Northeast, capable of attracting teams from all over Italy and abroad.
The race covers approximately 115-120 kilometers with start and finish in Monfalcone, crossing a territory of great scenic and historical value, including Fogliano Redipuglia and the municipalities of the Isonzo area. The challenging route, with its mountain sprints on the Collio and the Carso – from San Floriano del Collio to San Michele and San Martino del Carso – tests the young riders and provides a spectacle for a large and enthusiastic crowd.
The reference to the Resistance in the race name is no coincidence: the race is held on the anniversary of the Liberation and crosses lands marked by 20th-century history, from the Redipuglia War Memorial to the sites of remembrance in the Carso. A combination of sport and civic values that gives the competition a meaning that goes beyond the competitive result.
The event is organized by Team Isonzo Ciclistica Pieris, a historic local club, with the support of the municipalities it crosses. The 2026 edition was won by Nicola Padovan, after Davide Frigo had triumphed in 2025: young names destined, perhaps, for great careers, as has happened to many riders who have passed through these roads.
The 71st edition of the Coppa Montes – Gran Premio della Resistenza took place on Saturday, April 25, 2026. The race, reserved for the Junior category, saw 27 teams at the start along a route of approximately 115-120 km from Monfalcone to Monfalcone, through the Carso of Gorizia and the municipalities of the Isonzo area, including Fogliano Redipuglia. The victory went to Nicola Padovan.
The route crosses Fogliano Redipuglia and the Isonzo area; take the Redipuglia or Villesse (A4) motorway exit. Start and finish in Monfalcone.
The race is free for the public, who can follow it along the route. Live streaming is available online.
Accommodation facilities are available in Monfalcone, Gradisca d'Isonzo, and the municipalities of the Isonzo area.
