The historic hill climb on the roads of Passo della Consuma, in Pelago
The Coppa della Consuma is one of the most anticipated events of the Italian hill climb season. It takes place in the Municipality of Pelago, in the Province of Florence, on the slopes of the Tuscan Apennines that separate the Valdarno from the Casentino. The stage for this challenge is the famous Strada Regionale 70 della Consuma, a winding ribbon of asphalt that has long been a staple in the imagination of motor racing fans.
The race course measures 8.450 km and climbs from Diacceto, a hamlet of Pelago located at an altitude of about 490 meters, up to the junction for Vallombrosa, at just over 1,000 meters. It is a significant elevation gain tackled through an almost uninterrupted sequence of curves: a track considered one of the most technical and selective on the national circuit, where driving precision counts more than raw power. The route also passes through the villages of Diacceto and Borselli, within the Pelago municipal territory.
The Coppa della Consuma is not just a local event: it is a valid round for the Italian Mountain Speed Championship (CIVM), for both North and South zones, and for the Italian Historic Car Hill Climb Championship (CIVSA), of which it is often one of the opening events. Modern competition cars and fascinating vintage automobiles alternate on the roads of Consuma, creating a field that approaches 140 entries each year.
The race weekend follows the classic structure of hill climbs: technical and sporting checks open the event, followed by official practice sessions and finally the race itself, with historic and modern cars vying for the best times in the climb heats. A massive organizational effort is concentrated around the track, with paddocks, course marshals, and a detailed safety plan including ambulances, fire-fighting vehicles, and extrication teams.
Organized by ACI Promuove Srl together with Reggello Motorsport ASD, the Coppa della Consuma has its roots in a long history of hill climb races on Tuscan roads. For the inhabitants of Pelago and neighboring towns, it is an event of identity, capable of enlivening the spring with the roar of engines and attracting a large audience of enthusiasts and curious onlookers along the route.
The 2026 Coppa della Consuma confirmed the charm of the great Tuscan hill climb, drawing dozens of crews and numerous fans to Pelago along the SR 70 della Consuma. The race was valid for both the CIVM (Italian Mountain Speed Championship), North and South zones, and the CIVSA, the championship dedicated to historic cars, which opened the race day on Sunday morning, preceding the modern vehicles.
Particular attention was paid to safety, with an impressive deployment of vehicles and personnel: ambulances, fire-fighting vehicles with extrication equipment, extrication teams, tow trucks, and over ninety course marshals, in addition to chicanes installed in the fastest sections.
Pelago and the village of Diacceto can be reached from Florence in about 30-40 minutes by car along the Strada Regionale 70 della Consuma. The reference train station is Pontassieve, on the Florence-Arezzo line, from where you can continue by car or local transport.
During the practice and race days, the Strada Regionale 70 della Consuma is closed to traffic in the affected sections, with closures scheduled in the morning and afternoon. It is advisable to check for detours and follow the instructions of the marshals and the Municipal Police.
Access along the route and in authorized spectator areas is generally free. It is recommended to respect safety zones, wear footwear suitable for hilly paths, and bring water and sun protection.
