The ultimate classic of youth cycling in Borgo Valsugana
The Coppa d'Oro is one of Italy's most prestigious road cycling races for the Allievi category (15-16 year olds). Every year in mid-September, the event turns Borgo Valsugana, a town in the province of Trento in the heart of the Trentino Valsugana, into the reference point for the youth cycling movement. This is no ordinary race: it is dubbed the Grand Prix of Italian Sports Directors because, by tradition, the young athletes race to secure a win for their sports director, not just for themselves.
The race was established in 1965 by Carlo Dalla Torre. Early editions were held between Avio, Preore, and Trento before finding its permanent home in Borgo Valsugana in 1968. Since then, it has been organized by the Veloce Club Borgo and has become a fixed date on the national calendar, with a roll of honor that has launched many talents who later turned professional.
The race covers a route of approximately 80-90 kilometers, alternating between flat stretches, climbs, and technical sections, with the start and finish in Via Spagolla. Spectators follow the riders along the entire route, while the final sprint in the town center creates an atmosphere of a true international event, with hundreds of participants from all over Italy and several foreign countries.
The Coppa d'Oro is the highlight of the Settimana d'Oro (Golden Week) of youth cycling, which involves thousands of young people. The day before, the Coppa Rosa takes place, the women's version reserved for the 'Allieve' category, while the same weekend is also dedicated to the Coppa di Sera, a race designed for younger children (aged 7 to 16). It is an entire weekend where Borgo Valsugana breathes cycling from morning to night.
The entire town revolves around the race: the opening parade features the town band, costumed performers, local associations, and the mini-cyclists of the Veloce Club Borgo, creating a festive atmosphere that blends sport, tradition, and community. For the Province of Trento and the entire Trentino-Alto Adige region, the Coppa d'Oro represents a sporting and social heritage that has been renewed for over fifty years.
The 58th Coppa d'Oro is scheduled for Sunday, September 13, 2026, in Borgo Valsugana. The race for the Allievi category covers a route of approximately 80-90 kilometers, with the start and finish on Via Spagolla, bringing together young riders from all over Italy and abroad.
This edition is part of the Settimana d'Oro (Golden Week) of youth cycling: on the previous Saturday, September 12, 2026, the Coppa Rosa (reserved for the Allieve category) and the Coppa di Sera for younger children will be held, both based in Piazza Degasperi.
Borgo Valsugana can be reached by car via the SS47 Valsugana road, which connects Trento to Bassano del Grappa and Padua. By train, the town is served by the Trento-Venice railway line (Borgo Valsugana Centro and Borgo Valsugana Est stations). The nearest airports are Verona and Venice.
The heart of the event is between Piazza Degasperi and Via Spagolla, where the start, finish, and award ceremonies take place. The route winds through the Valsugana area and can be watched from various points along the road.
Organized by Veloce Club Borgo, with the support of the Pro Loco Borgo Valsugana (tel. +39 334 893 9200). Public attendance is free.
