About Contesa della Mezzaluna

In the heart of Renaissance Pienza, in Piazza Pio II, the Contesa della Mezzaluna ignites a friendly rivalry every year between the town's six districts. Flag-wavers and drummers from the local Musici e Sbandieratori group compete before a technical jury, vying for the traditional 'crescent moon' pins, a heraldic symbol linked to the Piccolomini family. A vibrant display of color, sound, and skill that kicks off the June 2nd long weekend in the City of Pius II, a UNESCO jewel of the Val d'Orcia in the province of Siena.

The Contesa della Mezzaluna in Pienza

The Contesa della Mezzaluna is the traditional challenge between the districts of Pienza, in the province of Siena, which every year brings the scenic Piazza Pio II to lifeโ€”the monumental heart of the Renaissance town commissioned by Pope Pius II Piccolomini. The event features young flag-wavers and drummers from the Pienza Musici e Sbandieratori Group, who perform in a competition of skill in flag-handling and rhythmic drumming.

The six districts of Pienza

Vying for victory are the six districts of Pienza: Gozzante, Mura, Casello, San Piero, Prato, and Case Nuove. Each district fields two flag-wavers and two drummers, drawn by lot during the winter, who prepare in the preceding months to face the test before the watchful eyes of a technical jury and the public gathered in the square.

The crescent moon pins

The group that delivers the best performance receives the traditional crescent moon pins: the reference is to the heraldic symbol linked to the Piccolomini dynasty, the family behind the transformation of Corsignano into the ideal Renaissance "city" of Pienza. The prize gives the competition its name and encapsulates its identity.

A festival of color and tradition

The Contesa typically takes place on the last weekend of May, opening the long Republic Day holiday weekend. The districts' procession winds through the historic center before gathering in Piazza Pio II, where the competition itself takes place. Colorful flags swirling in the air, the roll of drums, and historical costumes create an atmosphere suspended between historical re-enactment and popular festival, in one of the most famous squares of the Italian Renaissance.

Pienza, pearl of the Val d'Orcia

The event is part of the rich calendar of initiatives in the City of Pius II, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site for its historic center, an admirable example of Renaissance urban planning nestled in the landscapes of the Val d'Orcia, in Tuscany. The Contesa della Mezzaluna represents one of the moments when the Pienza community renews its bond with its history, offering visitors and tourists a free and evocative spectacle.

Contesa della Mezzaluna โ€” edition 2026
