The Concerto per Gesù Bambino has become a well-established tradition in Lequile, a small town in the province of Lecce, in the heart of Salento. Every year, at the beginning of January, the community gathers in the Church of San Vito Martire for an event that accompanies the final days of the Christmas season with music. Born from the desire to offer the townspeople a moment of reflection and celebration together, it has grown over time to become one of the most anticipated musical events of the Lequile winter.

The Baroque setting of the Church of San Vito

The concert is held in the stunning Baroque setting of the Church of San Vito Martire, a building deeply connected to the local devotion to the patron saint. Its typical Baroque facade is marked by pilasters with Corinthian capitals and a niche housing the statue of San Vito; inside, the single nave with side chapels and altars made of finely carved Lecce stone creates perfect acoustics and an atmosphere ideal for listening to sacred and Christmas music.

Music and prayer with the 'Santa Cecilia' Wind Orchestra

The star of the evening is the 'Santa Cecilia' Wind Orchestra, which offers a program capable of weaving together traditional Christmas arias, sacred pieces, and famous works from the classical and light repertoire. In past editions, the audience has enjoyed compositions by Ennio Morricone, Johannes Brahms, Georges Bizet, and even pieces by Harry Belafonte and Paul Anka, with the inevitable hymn to San Vito closing the concert. A narrator introduces each piece with brief commentary, turning the performance into a small musical journey accessible to all. As the archpriest Don Michele Giannone has noted, it is a true moment of music and prayer.

A tradition of the Maria SS. Assunta Parish

The event is organized by the Maria SS. Assunta Parish of Lequile, in collaboration with the Confraternities of the Immaculate, the Most Holy Sacrament, and the Suffrage. It is precisely this rootedness in parish and confraternal life that gives the concert its authentic character: not merely a performance, but a gift the community gives to itself on the liturgical day dedicated to the Most Holy Name of Jesus.

The concert traditionally takes place in the first days of January, near the liturgical feast of the Most Holy Name of Jesus, in the Church of San Vito Martire in Lequile. Now in its ninth edition, it remains a free event open to all, ideal for those wishing to experience the atmosphere of a Salento Christmas in a highly charming artistic and spiritual setting.
