Great chamber and symphonic music at the Palacultura in Messina
The Accademia Filarmonica di Messina is one of Sicily's oldest musical institutions, with origins tracing back to the early 1800s. Since then, the Academy has weathered the history of the city, surviving earthquakes and reconstruction, and continues today to be a landmark for the promotion of classical music in the Municipality of Messina and throughout north-eastern Sicily.
The heart of the Academy's activity is its annual concert season, which runs roughly from October to June with around thirty events. The program is intentionally diverse, ranging from symphonic music to musical theatre, opera to jazz, and baroque to contemporary influences. This formula has allowed the Academy to build a loyal audience over the years and introduce new generations to music.
The main venue is the Palacultura "Antonello da Messina", the city's modern cultural hub on Viale Boccetta, which features a spacious auditorium. Some events are also held in the Sala Laudamo of the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele and other city spaces, reflecting a constant dialogue between the Academy and Messina's cultural institutions.
Throughout the seasons, the stage hosts a rotation of great soloists, chamber ensembles, orchestras, and vocal groups. Alongside the main season, the Academy dedicates space to promoting young talent by hosting winners of international competitions and emerging performers, while also offering special events outside the subscription series, ranging from Christmas concerts to musical theatre and operetta.
For those living in or visiting Messina during the autumn and winter months, the Accademia Filarmonica season is the perfect opportunity to discover the vibrant musical scene of the Sicilian capital.
The 77th concert season of the Accademia Filarmonica di Messina opens on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at the Palacultura "Antonello da Messina" with the inaugural concert "Suoni di Spagna" and concludes in June 2026. The season features around thirty events, including approximately twenty in the main series and a dedicated showcase for young talent.
The lineup ranges from symphonic music to musical theatre, opera to jazz, and baroque to contemporary influences. Highly anticipated events include a recital by pianist Nikolai Lugansky, an homage to Maria Tipo by Andrea Lucchesini, "Opera Buffa!" with Elio, "The 5 Elements" by violinist Alessandro Quarta with the Orchestra Franco Caracciolo, a Vivaldi/Piazzolla comparison with Domenico Nordio, and a recital by the 2025 Busoni Competition winner, Yifan Wu.
Outside the subscription series, highlights include "Una sola giornata" with Sergio Cammariere and the operetta "The Merry Widow" by the Compagnia Italiana di Operette. During the holidays, the Washington Gospel Singers will perform on St. Stephen's Day, followed by the New Year's Concert with Chiara Taigi. The season also celebrates the 300th anniversary of Alessandro Scarlatti's death and pays tribute to Franco Battiato.
Concerts are primarily held at the Palacultura "Antonello da Messina", Viale Boccetta isolato 373, 98122 Messina. Some events take place at the Sala Laudamo and other city venues: please check the official program for the specific location of each event.
The Palacultura is located in the centre of Messina, a short distance from the central train station and the hydrofoil and ferry terminals for Reggio Calabria and Villa San Giovanni. By car, take the Messina Centro exit from the A20/A18 motorway.
The season is accessible via subscription or individual concert tickets. The "Carta del Docente" (Teacher's Card) is accepted. For updated pricing, priority booking, and purchasing methods, please consult the Academy's official website.
