A neighborhood festival in the heart of Tuscolano

Every year at the beginning of June, the San Gaspare del Bufalo Missionary Parish on Via Narni, in the Tuscolano district of Rome, wraps up its pastoral year with the Community Festival: two days of events open not only to parishioners but to the entire neighborhood. It is one of those Roman festivals that rarely makes it into tourist guidebooks, yet it captures the essence of the real city—the post-war residential neighborhoods built around Via Tuscolana, where the parish hall remains one of the few remaining social hubs.

"Roma Corossal" choral festival

The most anticipated moment is the "Roma Corossal" choral festival, established in 2018 by the Coro Decimaquinta and now a staple of the capital's amateur music calendar. Each edition brings together various Roman choral groups—parish choirs, polyphonic ensembles, and youth vocal groups—under the church vaults for an evening that alternates between sacred repertoire, classical polyphony, and popular songs. The festival is usually part of the Long Night of the Churches, a national initiative that opens Italian places of worship to evening concerts and tours on the first Friday of June, and is sponsored by Federcori and the Chorus Inside Lazio Association.

Missionary solidarity

The choral dimension is never an end in itself: the evening is organized in collaboration with the "Opere di San Gaspare" Missionary Group, and the donations collected support the congregation's missionary projects, particularly in Africa. This is a defining feature of the parish, named after Saint Gaspare del Bufalo (1786-1837), a Roman priest and founder of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood, who was canonized in 1954.

The second day: mass, agape, and concert

On Saturday, the festival shifts gears. It begins with the vigil mass in the late afternoon, followed by a move to the parish hall for the fraternal agape—a convivial gathering open to everyone where parish families bring and share homemade dishes. The evening concludes with a live pop music concert designed for all ages: the 2026 edition features the show "Easy Pop – The History of the Jukebox," a journey through the pop hits that have defined half a century of Italian and international music.

Community Festival and patronal feast

The parish actually hosts two related events at the same time of year. Alongside the Community Festival, which marks the end of the pastoral year, the community also celebrates the patronal feast in honor of Saint Gaspare. This traditionally includes a three-day preparation period, the "Festival of Peoples" with international cuisine in the parish hall, and a solemn Eucharistic celebration followed by a procession through the neighborhood streets.
