A Christmas tradition in the heart of Rome

The Christmas Concert in the Cathedral is one of the most iconic musical events of the Roman Advent. It is held in the Papal Basilica of Saint John Lateran, the cathedral of Rome and the "mother of all churches," in the city of Rome, Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region. Established in the mid-eighties, the concert has surpassed forty editions and has become, for many Romans, the true moment when Christmas begins in the city.

The Choir of the Diocese of Rome and Monsignor Frisina

The heart of the event is the Choir of the Diocese of Rome, a group that brings together over 200 choristers and soloists from the city's parishes and ecclesial communities. Since its founding, the choir has been directed by Monsignor Marco Frisina, one of Italy's most renowned composers for his liturgical chants and numerous television and film soundtracks on biblical themes. On stage, he is joined by the Nova Opera Orchestra, featuring more than fifty musicians.

The hallmark of the performance is the meeting between the power of an imposing choral mass and the orchestrations signed by Frisina himself, who introduces the pieces with brief reflections: it is not just a concert, but a musical meditation on the mystery of Christmas.

The repertoire

The program alternates between Italian folk tradition and great international classics, with forays into sacred music composed by Frisina. Among the titles that have accompanied the various editions over the years are pieces such as Tu scendi dalle stelle, Adeste fideles, Joy to the World, Stille Nacht, the Magnificat, and numerous Advent carols, often reinterpreted in choral and symphonic versions.

The event is promoted by the Nova Opera Foundation with the patronage of the Diocese of Rome and is usually broadcast live or recorded by the broadcasters Telepace and TV2000, as well as on the diocese's YouTube channel: those who cannot enter the basilica can still follow it from home.
