Commemoration of the Apparition of Saint John the Baptist (Patronal Feast)

A festival that begins in the heart of the night

In Pontecorvo, a town in the province of Frosinone overlooking the Liri valley, the patronal feast is not celebrated at noon, but before dawn. On the second Sunday of May, around 3:00 AM, blank shots and the ringing of the bells of the Co-Cathedral Basilica of San Bartolomeo Apostolo wake the entire city: the most anticipated day of the year begins, renewing the memory of the Apparition of Saint John the Baptist.

The miracle of 1137

Tradition tells that on April 14, 1137, in the Melfi area along the Liri river, the Baptist appeared to a farmer named Giovanni Mele, asking for a church to be built on that spot. Archbishop Grimoaldo, according to the handed-down story, also received an apparition and laid the first stone of the sanctuary that same year. The building, damaged during the Second World War, was replaced in 1956 by a small chapel that still marks the site of the apparition today. Due to liturgical calendar adjustments, the commemoration was moved from April 14 to the second Sunday of May, but the ritual has remained essentially unchanged for over eight hundred years.

The penitential rite and the pilgrimage

Around 4:00 AM, the diocesan bishop, surrounded by the priests of the pastoral area, presides over the penitential liturgy in the co-cathedral. At 5:00 AM, once the celebration concludes, the faithful gathered inside and outside the church erupt in the traditional cry "Evviva San Giovanni" (Long live Saint John), and the pilgrimage on foot to the sanctuary of San Giovanni Appare, a few kilometers from the historic center, begins. The Eucharist is celebrated on the sanctuary's parvis, and participants renew their baptismal promises; the blessing of the sick is provided along the route.

The return to the city

Around noon, the procession begins its return to the center. The return of the venerated statue to the co-cathedral is the most spectacular moment of the day: the crowd lines the main street, the throne with the saint advances among bagpipers and the band, and women walk barefoot carrying large candles, following a vow passed down from generation to generation. In the late afternoon, the solemn Eucharistic celebration concludes the liturgical part of the day.

The secular side: music, lights, and fireworks

Alongside the religious program, organized by the Confraternity of Saint John the Baptist together with the parish, a secular program has been held for days, filling the center of Pontecorvo with illuminations, market stalls, concerts in Piazza De Gasperi, and a final fireworks display late in the evening. In 2025, the stage hosted Matia Bazar, confirming a tradition that knows how to alternate popular devotion with a great village festival.

In the calendar of patronal festivals of southern Lazio, the Commemoration of the Apparition holds a special place: while most of Italy celebrates the birth of the Baptist on June 24, here the apparition is remembered, a nearly unique case. For the Municipality of Pontecorvo, the day represents the main identity-defining event of the year, capable of attracting emigrants, families, and visitors from neighboring towns in the Ciociaria and Cassinate regions.
