A day of vintage motoring in the heart of Irpinia

The Classic Car Gathering - Piero Mazzone Memorial was born from a simple and heartfelt idea: to remember, through the cars he loved, a man who had made vintage motoring his life's passion. Piero Mazzone was a classic vehicle enthusiast and a regular participant in numerous regularity rallies, remembered with affection by the entire Irpinian sporting community. The Scuderia Avellino Racing wanted to dedicate an event to him that brings together two dimensions that are inseparable in the world of historic motoring: the memory of people and the memory of machines.
The setting is San Potito Ultra, a town of just over 1,500 inhabitants in the province of Avellino, in the heart of Irpinia and inland Campania. It is a compact village, dominated by the 18th-century Palazzo dei Baroni Amatucci—now the town hall and home to the Museum of Work—which gives its name to the square where the gathering takes place.
For one morning, the town's main square becomes an open-air exhibition. The cars arrive one by one, park along the perimeter, and remain visible to everyone: residents, families, children, and curious passersby. There is no ticket, no fencing, and no distance between the public and the cars. Visitors can wander among the models, listen to owners share the story of each vehicle, and photograph dashboards, chrome, and license plates that tell decades of Italian history.
This is, ultimately, the most authentic meaning of an Italian-style classic car gathering: a mechanical heritage that does not remain locked in a garage but returns to the road, among the people, in the town square.
The event includes the presentation of three awards, designed to recognize different aspects of collecting:
The gathering is held under the patronage of the Automobile Club Avellino and the Municipality of San Potito Ultra, and is recognized by ACI Sport and ACI Storico. This is not just a bureaucratic detail: inclusion in the ACI Storico circuit places the event within the national network of events dedicated to Italian historic motoring and certifies its cultural, as well as sporting, value.
The organizers' stated goal is twofold: to promote the passion for historic cars and to pass on the timeless charm of vintage motoring to new generations. For this reason, the gathering is designed as a local community event, open and accessible, rather than a competition reserved for industry insiders.
The San Potito Ultra event is part of a motoring tradition with deep roots in Irpinia. The province of Avellino, with its mountain roads, hairpin bends, and Apennine mountain passes, has been a venue for rallies, hill climbs, and regularity trials for decades. Local racing teams are vibrant associations animated by volunteers and enthusiasts, and classic car gatherings represent the moment when this world opens up to the wider public.
Visitors from outside the region will find, in addition to the cars, a territory of great interest: the villages of the Sabato Valley, the vineyards of Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo, and the Irpinian cuisine featuring chestnuts, mushrooms, and meats. A morning gathering is easily combined with a lunch in the village and an afternoon exploring inland Irpinia.
For 2026, there are no official announcements yet regarding the Classic Car Gathering - Piero Mazzone Memorial in San Potito Ultra, in the province of Avellino. The established format includes a morning gathering in Piazza Barone Amatucci, with an exhibition of historic cars and an awards ceremony, but dates and organizational details have not been released.
Those wishing to participate, as exhibitors or as part of the public, can follow the updates from Scuderia Avellino Racing and the communications from the Municipality of San Potito Ultra, which in previous years have announced the event a few days in advance through the local Irpinian press.
Piazza Barone Amatucci, in the historic center of San Potito Ultra (AV), in front of the Palazzo dei Baroni Amatucci, home to the Town Hall and the Museum of Work.
By car: San Potito Ultra can be reached from Avellino in about 15-20 minutes via the road to the Sabato Valley. From Naples, take the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, exit at Avellino Est, then follow local roads towards Manocalzati / San Potito Ultra. The town is just over an hour from the regional capital.
By train: The reference station is Avellino; onward connections to San Potito Ultra are provided by provincial bus lines, with reduced service on holidays. On festive days, traveling by car is recommended.
The town center is small: during the gathering, the square is occupied by the displayed cars, so it is best to leave your vehicle in nearby parking areas and reach the center on foot in a few minutes.
Public participation is free and open to all. Registration for historic vehicles takes place directly in the square during the morning reception phase: for information on requirements and procedures, it is advisable to contact Scuderia Avellino Racing in advance.
The event takes place in December outdoors: winter temperatures in Irpinia are cold, so it is best to dress warmly. The mid-morning hours are the best for photographing the cars once they are all lined up.
