The new contemporary circus festival by LaCarpiEstate, between Piazzale Re Astolfo and the Pio Castle
Circostante is one of the freshest new additions to the 2026 edition of LaCarpiEstate, the extensive programme of events that enlivens the Municipality of Carpi, in the province of Modena, from May to October under the theme "A Hive of Events". It is a festival dedicated to contemporary circus, a genre that blends acrobatics, balancing, juggling, physical theatre, and visual poetry, and which has been captivating squares and courtyards throughout Emilia-Romagna for some years.
The programme focuses on three events in July. It begins in Piazzale Re Astolfo, a large square overlooking the historic centre, before moving to the evocative Courtyard of Honour of the Pio Castle, the Palazzo dei Pio that dominates the famous Piazza dei Martiri, one of the largest squares in Italy. The Renaissance setting of the castle lends a special atmosphere to the performances, where circus arts dialogue with the city's history.
Consistent with the philosophy of LaCarpiEstate, summarised by the Councillor for Culture Giuliano Albarani in the concept of "cultural welfare" made up of accessible and never elitist events, Circostante offers three completely free evenings. It is a proposal designed primarily for families and young audiences, but capable of captivating anyone who loves live outdoor performances on warm Carpi summer evenings.
Circostante is part of a very rich calendar: alongside contemporary circus, LaCarpiEstate brings music to the city with the CarpInMusica festival, theatre, cinema, literature, sports, and events for children, spread across the historic centre, parks, and surrounding villages. Experiencing an evening of Circostante therefore means connecting with all the cultural energy of Carpi, one of the most vibrant cities in the Modenese plain.
For 2026, LaCarpiEstate is launching Circostante, a new contemporary circus festival by the Municipality of Carpi. There are three events, all free: on 10 July in Piazzale Re Astolfo and on 18 and 24 July in the Courtyard of Honour of the Pio Castle. The festival is part of Carpi's extensive summer programme themed "A Hive of Events", promoting accessible cultural offerings spread throughout the historic centre.
The 2026 calendar includes three evenings of contemporary circus:
The show titles, guest companies, and times have not yet been announced: the detailed programme will be released by the Municipality of Carpi in the weeks leading up to the festival at visitcarpi.it/lacarpiestate.
The Renaissance setting of the Courtyard of Honour of the Pio Castle, which hosts two of the three evenings, is one of the highlights of this debut edition.
The performances are held in Piazzale Re Astolfo (10 July) and in the Courtyard of Honour of the Pio Castle, in Piazza dei Martiri in Carpi (18 and 24 July), both in the historic centre.
Carpi can be reached by train on the regional line (Carpi station, a few minutes' walk from the centre) and by car from the Carpi exit of the A22 Brenner motorway. The historic centre is largely pedestrianised: it is advisable to use the perimeter car parks.
All three events have free admission. Full programme and details at visitcarpi.it/lacarpiestate; information at the Carpi IAT tourist office.
