Cinema comes to Corviale

CineCorviale Summer stands out as one of the most successful community cinema initiatives in Rome, Lazio. It takes place in the Corviale district, Municipality XI, in the shadow of the iconic building known as the « Serpentone ». For several evenings, it turns the courtyard of the Nicoletta Campanella Multipurpose Center (Via Marino Mazzacurati 74) into a completely free open-air arena.

Launched in 2020 by the Il Giardino in Festa association, the project has grown year after year to become a staple of the Roman Summer. It is promoted by Rome Capital — Department of Culture, is a winner of the Roma Creativa 365 public call, and is produced in collaboration with Zètema Progetto Cultura.

Quality programming, far from the city center

The artistic direction, led by Aisling Pallotta since 2019, curates a program each year that alternates between independent Italian and international productions and European animated films. This choice is intentional: bringing titles to the suburbs that rarely reach local neighborhood theaters is the very heart of the project. Screenings are often accompanied by meetings with directors, actors, and industry professionals who engage with the audience at the end of the evening.

Workshops for children and families

On evenings dedicated to animation, the program kicks off in the late afternoon with free workshops for children (by reservation): CartAnimata for ages 3-6 and stop-motion courses for children aged 7-10. It is a way to introduce younger generations to the language of moving images, not just as spectators, but as budding creators.

Inclusion and accessibility

The arena is fully accessible to people with disabilities, and the free admission is a core identity choice: the festival aims to be a space for culture, sharing, and social interaction open to all citizens, in a neighborhood that has historically suffered from its distance from cultural hubs. The evenings also serve as a meeting point for neighbors, with a refreshment area accompanying the screenings.

Not to be confused with the Arena di Corviale

In the same district, the Arena di Corviale—part of the « Vivi il Cinema! » event promoted by Rome Capital—takes place in July at a different location. These are two distinct initiatives: CineCorviale Summer maintains its identity as a neighborhood festival, self-managed by the Il Giardino in Festa association and traditionally held at the end of summer, between late August and early September.

Those looking for the authentic Rome, the one that lives outside the tourist circuits, will find here a sincere portrait of the contemporary city: plastic chairs, a screen, and a neighborhood coming together.
