The Christmas market in the Matese village, featuring crafts, local products, and festive alleys
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Christmas Solstice is the Christmas market of San Potito Sannitico, a town of just under two thousand inhabitants in the province of Caserta, Campania, nestled at the foot of the Matese massif. For two days in December, the historic center transforms into a path of stalls and small wooden houses winding through the stone alleys and 17th-18th century noble palaces, starting from Palazzo Filangieri, one of the community's architectural symbols.
The 2025 edition, the twenty-fourth, took place on Saturday, December 20th, and Sunday, December 21st: a milestone that speaks better than any presentation to the continuity of an event born in the early 2000s, which has become one of the most anticipated appointments in the winter calendar of the upper Caserta area.
The style of the event is that of an authentic, unpretentious village market: not a commercial fair, but a showcase of the local artisan and agri-food skills. In the public notices opening applications, the Municipality explicitly speaks of the desire to promote local specialties, and this is the common thread that holds the two days together.
The Christmas Solstice is organized by the Municipal Administration of San Potito Sannitico together with the Pro Loco Genius Loci. Every year, the Municipality publishes a call for expressions of interest: artisans, hobbyists, producers, associations, and operators fill out the form available on the official website or at the Municipal Office and send it via PEC or to the Protocol Office by the indicated deadline (for the 2025 edition, December 12th at noon). Exhibitor participation is free, precisely to encourage the widest possible community involvement.
The market is not an isolated event: it is part of a Christmas program that the Municipality builds throughout December, which over the years has included book presentations at Palazzo Filangieri, theatrical performances and concerts at the Municipal Auditorium, flea markets and artistic craft fairs, as well as choral music evenings in the church of Sant'Antonio. Visitors arriving for the Solstice will therefore almost always find other accompanying events on nearby days.
The town has been part of the international Cittaslow network since 2008 and is located within the Matese Regional Park: forests, mountain springs, and a historic center at about 280 meters above sea level. The town preserves the church of Santa Caterina, the sanctuary of the Madonna di Loreto, and a series of noble courtyards and palaces, and is also known for the murals that enliven its streets. A setting that, in December, with the lights on and the cold of the nearby mountains, gives the market an intimate atmosphere very different from that of large urban events.
It is a family-friendly event, suitable for a half-day trip: you park at the entrance to the town, walk among the stalls, taste something, and take advantage of the visit to discover a village untouched by mass tourism. For those staying in the Matese area — there is no shortage of farmhouses, B&Bs, and country houses — it is the ideal opportunity to combine winter nature and Christmas tradition in one of the most authentic areas of inland Campania.
As of the update date of this page, the official dates for the 2026 edition of the Christmas Solstice in San Potito Sannitico, in the province of Caserta, have not yet been published. This is completely normal for a December event: the Municipality and the Pro Loco Genius Loci usually release the Christmas calendar and the notice for exhibitors during the autumn.
Based on previous editions, it is reasonable to expect two days of market in the historic center, with stalls of crafts and hobbies, stalls of typical Matese products, and food and wine tasting points, included in a broader municipal program of concerts and shows. Admission to the market is traditionally free.
This page will be updated as soon as the Municipality of San Potito Sannitico publishes the official dates and program for the 2026 edition.
The most practical way is by car: San Potito Sannitico is located a few kilometers from Piedimonte Matese and Alife, in the valley at the foot of the Matese, about an hour and a half from Naples and a little less from Caserta. It is advisable to leave the car along the access roads to the town and walk to the historic center, where the market route is located.
Admission to the market is free. The days are traditionally the weekend closest to the winter solstice, with stalls opening in the afternoon and continuing into the evening. Precise hours are communicated each year by the Municipality and the Pro Loco in the days leading up to the event.
Artisans, hobbyists, producers, and associations interested in participating must submit an application using the form published on the Municipality's official website, to be sent via PEC to [email protected] or delivered to the Protocol Office by the deadline indicated in the notice. Participation is free.
You are in the mountains: wear warm clothing and comfortable shoes for the stone alleys. Those who want to extend their visit can combine the market with a hike in the Matese Regional Park or lunch at one of the local farmhouses.
