Christmas in the heart of the ancient city

When the festive lights glow among the medieval towers and walls, Tuscania—one of the most fascinating destinations in the Viterbo Tuscia region, famous for the Romanesque basilicas of San Pietro and Santa Maria Maggiore—becomes an open-air Christmas stage. "Christmas in Tuscania" is the holiday program promoted by the Municipality of Tuscania together with the Pro Loco of Tuscania APS and a dense network of local associations, schools, and businesses. From December 14, 2025, to January 6, 2026, the historic center, the Municipal Garden, theaters, and churches host concerts, shows, markets, and entertainment for all ages.

The Christmas Village at the Municipal Garden

The heart of the event is the Christmas and Food Village set up in the Municipal Garden: stalls and stands with tastings organized by the Pro Loco, Christmas workshops for children, and, on the Sunday before Christmas, the arrival of Santa Claus by carriage accompanied by the Municipal Band's parade along Via Roma. It is a time when the city comes together, surrounded by the scent of sweets, music, and entertainment for the little ones.

Holiday music: gospel, opera, and "Tuscania in musica"

The musical program is surprisingly rich for a town of a few thousand inhabitants. It ranges from opera at the Teatro Pocci to the major gospel concert by Tuscia in Jazz at the Teatro Veriano Luchetti, and the "Tuscania in musica" festival, which brings chamber music to the city's monumental sites between December 27 and 30. Highlights include cellist Lucia Fiorelli with pianist Monica Pia Galullo, the guitar duo of Gian Marco Ciampa and Pietro Locatto, and a matinée dedicated to young talents from international guitar workshops, held between the Teatro Rivellino and the former church of Santa Croce, with free admission or discounted tickets.

Traditions: the Agrialbero and the Befana

Alongside the musical events, the most iconic traditions endure: the lighting of the Agrialbero in Viale Trieste, a "farmer's" Christmas tree that celebrates the agricultural soul of the Lazio Maremma, and the arrival of the Befana at the Municipal Garden on January 6, which closes the festivities with sweets and stockings for children. There are also unique proposals like the Christmas Hydrobikes Day and Christmas in the pool at the Aquatix facility.

The legacy of "Natale'Insieme"

The current format builds on the legacy of "Natale'Insieme," the festival launched by the Pro Loco in the winter of 2023-2024 within the spaces of the 15th-century Sant'Agostino seminary, featuring a Santa Claus village animated by elves, a nativity scene exhibition, and the Living Nativity. Year after year, the project has expanded into a widespread program that involves the entire city.
