Christmas markets, lights, and traditions in the medieval village of Sabina
When the holiday season arrives, the small town of Casperia, in the province of Rieti, transforms into one of the most enchanting natural nativity scenes in Lazio. Perched on the Sabina Mountains at an altitude of about four hundred meters and listed among The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, the town offers a unique setting: paved alleys, stone arches, stairways, and the scenic Piazza del Municipio, the heart of the "Christmas in Casperia" event.
Throughout the holiday period, the historic center fills with Christmas markets featuring artisanal products, gift ideas, and traditional sweets. The air is filled with the scent of roasted chestnuts and mulled wine, while food stalls and open wine cellars offer specialties from the Sabina region, an area famous for its extra virgin olive oil. It is the perfect opportunity for a stroll among the stalls, warmed by the festive lights that wrap around the village.
The event is about more than just shopping and tastings. The calendar is packed with moments designed for families: Santa's post office where little ones can drop off their letters, children's shows, concerts, dance performances, and the choreography of the majorettes that add color to the festive days. Music and entertainment accompany residents and visitors throughout the Christmas season.
Once called Aspra until 1947 and already mentioned in Virgil's Aeneid, Casperia preserves its medieval layout intact, enclosed by 13th-century walls accessible via Porta Romana and Porta Santa Maria. The village is also famous for being pedestrian-only: cars remain outside the walls, making the Christmas visit even more intimate and authentic. Organized by the Municipality of Casperia, "Christmas in Casperia" is an invitation to rediscover the Rieti Sabina region in its most intimate and luminous form, just an hour from Rome.
For the 2025-2026 holiday season, the Municipality of Casperia offered a rich program dedicated to Christmas, from December 21, 2025, to January 11, 2026, with opening hours roughly from 10:30 AM to 8:00 PM. Highlights included: Christmas markets with handicrafts and typical Sabina products, roasted chestnuts and mulled wine, food stalls and open wine cellars, Santa's post office for children, shows and entertainment for the little ones, concerts, dance performances, and majorette shows. An edition that successfully combined tradition, taste, and fun in the heart of the Rieti village.
The event took place from December 21, 2025, to January 11, 2026, in Piazza del Municipio and along the streets of the historic center, with hours roughly from 10:30 AM to 8:00 PM. The calendar included:
