Floats, masks, and Barbazecch's spider car in the heart of Bazzano
The Children's Carnival of Bazzano is one of the most cherished events in the winter calendar of the Bologna Apennines. Its origins date back to 1870, placing it among the recognized historic Carnivals of Emilia-Romagna. It takes place in the historic center of Bazzano, a district of the Municipality of Valsamoggia, in the province of Bologna, and has the unique characteristic of being entirely dedicated to children, who are its true protagonists.
The symbol of the festival is Barbazecch, the traditional mask of Bazzano. Aboard his unmistakable spider car, Barbazecch and his wife lead the procession and, at the end of the parade, deliver the famous dscaurs, the speech in dialect addressed to the crowd, which has become an eagerly awaited ritual for generations. A popular folklore surrounding this figure has been passed down from father to son for over a century and a half.
The heart of the event is the parade of allegorical floats and costumed children, which winds through the streets of the historic center starting from Piazza Garibaldi. The procession is enlivened by the Children's Train, the distribution of candies, and many surprises along the route, in a joyful and family-friendly atmosphere. Groups like the Phoenix Majorettes & Twirling and the town's Brass Band accompany the parades.
The Bazzano Carnival is also a moment for the community: at the end of the parades, the celebration continues with live music, the food stand in the Parish Park, and the grand Charity Raffle, the proceeds of which support the local nursery school. This demonstrates how, in Valsamoggia, Carnival fun intertwines with the spirit of solidarity of the parish of Santo Stefano, which organizes the event.
Free and open to all, the Children's Carnival of Bazzano is the ideal choice for a family Sunday in February. Amidst colorful floats, masks, snacks, and music, it offers an authentic glimpse into the folk traditions of Emilia-Romagna, away from the crowds of major Carnival events and close to the genuine warmth of an Apennine village.
The 2026 edition, the 61st in its history, reprised the classic format of the Bazzano Carnival, enriched this year by an event dedicated to families on Fat Thursday. The two Sundays of parades, starting from Piazza Garibaldi at 2:30 PM, featured allegorical floats, costumed children, the Children's Train, and the unmissable Barbazecch in his spider car.
In case of bad weather, a reserve date was set for Sunday, February 22.
