About San Petronio

Every October 4th, Bologna celebrates San Petronio, the patron saint of the city and the Diocese. The feast combines a solemn religious celebration in the Basilica of San Petronio, a procession with the saint's relics led by the Archbishop and a blessing to the city from the parvis, with the grand popular events in Piazza Maggiore: music, games for families, free concerts, and, to conclude the evening, a fireworks display over the crescentone. It is the most identity-defining day for Bolognese people, where the sacred and the piazza festival merge in the heart of the historic center.

The Feast of Bologna's Patron Saint

October 4th is the day Bologna gathers around its patron saint, San Petronio, bishop of the city in the 5th century and a foundational figure of the city's identity. The commemoration, which involves the entire Municipality of Bologna and the Diocese, has for centuries been one of the most cherished events in the Emilia-Romagna calendar: a day of civil celebration when schools and many offices remain closed, and the city experiences a climate of collective participation.

The Religious Heart: The Basilica of San Petronio

The center of the celebrations is the majestic Basilica of San Petronio, which overlooks Piazza Maggiore and is one of the largest Gothic churches in Europe. On the patron saint's day, morning Holy Masses are followed in the afternoon by the solemn celebration presided over by the Archbishop, Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi. At the end of Mass, the Archbishop leads the procession with the saint's relics around the square and imparts the blessing to the city from the parvis of the Basilica, in a moment of intense religious significance accompanied by civil authorities and the Musical Chapel of San Petronio.

The Piazza Festival

Alongside the liturgical dimension, Piazza Maggiore transforms into a large space for a popular festival open to all. The program typically includes:

  • Games, music, and shows for children and families on the crescentone in the afternoon;
  • a concert by the Musical Chapel of San Petronio in the Basilica;
  • music by the Verdi Note dell'Antoniano;
  • an evening concert with guests from the Italian music scene;
  • the concluding fireworks display which, around 11 PM, lights up the sky above Piazza Maggiore.

A Tradition That Renews Itself

The Feast of San Petronio is organized in collaboration between the Municipality of Bologna, the Diocese, and the Bologna Welcome Foundation. Starting from 2026, the day takes on an even more special significance: October 4th, which also coincides with the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi proclaimed a national holiday, makes the patron saint's day a double celebration for the city. For those visiting Bologna during this period, it is the ideal opportunity to discover the historic center with its UNESCO World Heritage porticoes, Bolognese cuisine, and the unique atmosphere of a city celebrating its roots.
