The Canneto Carnival in Fara in Sabina, where the little ones take center stage
In the heart of the Rieti Sabina region, the small village of Canneto, part of the municipality of Fara in Sabina (Province of Rieti), preserves one of the most heartwarming and long-standing carnival traditions in the area: the Children's Carnival. Now in its 56th edition in 2026, the event is designed entirely around the little ones, who are not just spectators but the true protagonists of the celebration.
Organized by the Pro Canneto Association with the support of the Municipality of Fara in Sabina, the event turns the village streets into a cheerful procession of colors, confetti, and masks for an afternoon. The parade of allegorical floats and masked groups traditionally starts from the Montecavallo district and winds through the village to reach Piazza Luigi Pacieri, the beating heart of the festivities.
What makes the Canneto Carnival special is its family-friendly atmosphere. Alongside the float parade, the program features children's entertainment, baby dance parties, games, balloon sculpting, and the distribution of sweets. It is an afternoon where fun is guaranteed for all ages, in a spirit of community participation that involves the entire town.
The event also honors the ancient roots of the Sabina Carnival: the traditional Pantasima dance, a typical carnival figure of the area, and the lighting of the final bonfire, a ritual that symbolically marks the end of the carnival period. A food stall serving local specialties is also available throughout the day.
The Children's Carnival of Canneto is one of the stops on the Fara in Sabina Carnival circuit, a program that brings various districts of the municipality to life between January and February: from Corese Terra to Passo Corese, and from Talocci to Canneto. Each village puts on its own parade and masks, in a relay of festivities that highlights the popular traditions of the Sabina region and unites the various local communities.
Fara in Sabina, with its historic village and the nearby Farfa Abbey, is one of the most charming destinations in the Province of Rieti: attending the Children's Carnival is also an opportunity to discover an authentic corner of Lazio, far from the most beaten tourist paths.
On February 15, 2026, Canneto celebrated the 56th edition of its Children's Carnival, confirming its status as one of the most beloved events in the Fara in Sabina Carnival. From 2:30 PM, the village streets were filled with masks, confetti, and allegorical floats, featuring entertainment dedicated to children and the parade organized by the Pro Canneto Association with the patronage of the Municipality of Fara in Sabina.
The 56th edition is part of the Fara in Sabina carnival circuit, which also involved the districts of Corese Terra, Passo Corese, and Talocci between January and February 2026.
Canneto is a district of Fara in Sabina, in the Province of Rieti (Lazio). By car, it can be reached via the Via Salaria (SS4) taking the exit towards Fara in Sabina; from Rome, the journey takes about an hour. The reference train station is Fara Sabina-Montelibretti, on the Rome-Orte line.
Participation in the Children's Carnival is free. A food stall with local specialties is available.
As this is an outdoor festival designed for families, we recommend comfortable clothing and, for the little ones, a carnival costume.
