About Certe volte sul Po

The Museo Diotti in Casalmaggiore hosts "Certe volte sul Po", an exhibition that intertwines painting and poetry. The protagonist is the artist Alfonso Borghi, who with about twenty works on paper gives shape and colour to the verses of the poet Luigi Menozzi (1937-2015): evoked rather than described landscapes, where colour becomes matter, intensifies in depicting nature, and softens in the whites of fog and Po Valley light. Alongside works on paper, ceramics and recent bronze sculptures complete a journey celebrating the deep bond between art and the great river. The exhibition opens on May 10, 2026.

When painting meets poetry

At the Museo Diotti in Casalmaggiore, a city in the Province of Cremona overlooking the Po, the exhibition "Certe volte sul Po" creates a dialogue between two languages: the painting of Alfonso Borghi and the poetry of Luigi Menozzi (1937-2015). About twenty works on paper were created as a visual response to the poet's verses, in a journey that uses the river and its landscape as a common thread.

Alfonso Borghi, matter that becomes landscape

Born and active in the Reggio Emilia area, in Caprara di Campegine, Alfonso Borghi has been painting since 1965, evolving from figurative-expressionist to a predominantly abstract, gestural, and colourful painting style that evokes landscapes without ever being purely descriptive. In this exhibition, his colour and matter adapt to Menozzi's words: they intensify to convey the roughness of nature, then shift to whites to suggest the fog and light of the Po Valley plain.

Paper, ceramics, bronze

In addition to works on paper, the exhibition includes ceramics made at the Fornace San Giorgio in Albisola and recent bronze sculptures, showcasing the infinite potential of matter in the artist's hands. The exhibition is curated by Stefania Provinciali.

The Museo Diotti, a treasure chest of art on the Po

The exhibition venue is the Museo Diotti, the city's art institution in Casalmaggiore, named after the painter Giuseppe Diotti. A place that, with this exhibition, confirms the city's commitment to culture on the banks of the great river, in the heart of the Oglio-Po region.
