Allegorical floats, masks, and satire in the heart of inland Sicily
The Centuripe Carnival is one of the most cherished traditions of the Municipality of Centuripe, a charming village in the province of Enna, in the heart of inland Sicily. For several years now, thanks to the commitment of the Associazione Cinque C APS and the Associazione Kento, and the renewed enthusiasm of the community, the Carnival in Centuripe has been reborn with new energy, becoming an event capable of attracting visitors from across the region.
The heart of the event lies in the allegorical floats and costumed groups, crafted with dedication by local volunteers and master artisans. They are famous for their attention to detail and the lively social satire that characterizes the Centuripe tradition: the floats recount and poke fun at current events with irony, bringing to life spectacular structures and original costumes that are the result of months of hard work.
The masked parades represent the soul of the festival. The processions start from Piazza Lanuvio and end in Piazza Duomo, crossing the historic center in a succession of colors, sounds, and joy. Along the route, there is no shortage of music, dancing in the square, and roving entertainment designed specifically for children, making the Carnival a festival suitable for the whole family.
The festivities reach their peak on Shrove Tuesday, with the grand final parade and the awards ceremony for the best costumes, groups, and creations. It is the moment when the creativity and strong community spirit of Centuripe are publicly celebrated, sealing days of intense popular participation.
Experiencing the Carnival is also an opportunity to discover Centuripe, a city of art with ancient origins, known for its unique urban layout and its panoramic views of the Nebrodi mountains and Mount Etna. Inland Sicily offers here one of its most authentic Carnival celebrations, far from the major tourist flows and deeply rooted in the life of the town.
The 2026 Centuripe Carnival was held from February 12 to 17, bringing the historic center of the Enna village to life with parades, allegorical floats, and costumed groups created by local volunteers and artisans. The masked processions followed the traditional route from Piazza Lanuvio to Piazza Duomo, accompanied by music, dancing in the square, and entertainment for children.
As per tradition, the event organized by the Associazione Cinque C APS reached its climax on Shrove Tuesday, with the grand final parade and the awards ceremony for the best costumes and creations, celebrating the creativity and community spirit of Centuripe.
Centuripe is located in the province of Enna, in Sicily. By car, it can be reached from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (exits towards Catenanuova or Gerbini) and from the provincial roads that climb up to the village. From Catania, it takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes by car. The nearest train station is Catenanuova-Centuripe, on the Catania-Palermo line.
The Carnival takes place during the Carnival period, from Fat Thursday to Shrove Tuesday. The parades enliven the historic center in the afternoon and evening.
The parades are free and take place outdoors: wear comfortable and warm clothing. For the detailed program and updated times, it is recommended to contact the tourist office of the Municipality of Centuripe.
