The neighborhood festivals of Gesualdo, blending Irpinian cuisine, music, and solidarity
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Cene Rionali is a gastronomic event that transforms the districts of Gesualdo into open-air kitchens every August. In this town in the province of Avellino, Campania, residents compete through their recipes: each evening is hosted by a different district, setting up long tables along the alleys, squares, and open spaces of the village. There is no single venue; the festival is itinerant, moving from one neighborhood to another according to a schedule set by the organizers, with recent stops including areas like Piano della Croce and Torre dei Monaci.
The formula is simple and deeply community-focused: there are no professional caterers or stands; instead, the residents of the host neighborhood cook, serve, and set up the space themselves. The competition between districts is friendly, and as the organizers like to repeat, the only true winner is solidarity.
Those who attend the Cene Rionali embark on a small journey through ancient Irpinian culinary traditions. Irpinia is a land of mountains and hills, with a rustic cuisine based on homemade pasta, vegetables, legumes, cheeses, and meats, alongside a prominent winemaking vocation. This is the birthplace of some of Southern Italy's most celebrated wines, from Taurasi and Fiano di Avellino to Greco di Tufo. These neighborhood dinners capture this domestic dimension of food, feeling much more like a family meal than a commercial festival.
The Cene Rionali are more than just a village party. All proceeds from the evenings are donated to the Fratres Gesualdo Sturno Villamaina group, a local blood donor association. Funds support blood donation promotion, health prevention campaigns, and projects to remove architectural barriers. It is a model of a festival where fundraising is not a detail, but the very reason for the initiative, supported by the Pro Loco of Gesualdo and local associations.
Beyond the dining table, there is always space for entertainment. Performances by the Carlo Gesualdo Dance School bring the evenings to life, while music and dancing continue after dinner, creating the typical atmosphere of an Apennine summer: long tables, children running between seats, and elders sharing stories of how the neighborhood used to be. For visitors, it is one of the most authentic ways to connect with the Gesualdo community.
The town hosting the event is worth a visit in its own right. Gesualdo is dominated by its castle, linked to Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa and one of the most original madrigal composers of the late Renaissance, who lived and composed here. The historic center, perched with panoramic views over the Ufita Valley, retains its medieval layout of districts and alleysโthe very urban structure that gives meaning to the neighborhood dinner format. In the town's summer calendar, the Cene Rionali join other historic events like the Gesualdo Folk Event and the Flight of the Angel on the last Sunday of August.
The festival traditionally takes place in August, with several evenings spread throughout the month and a final dinner to close the cycle. Dates and host neighborhoods are announced annually by the organizers, usually close to the summer season; it is advisable to check the updated calendar via the Pro Loco of Gesualdo or the Fratres group's channels before traveling.
At the moment, no official dates have been published for the 2026 edition of the Cene Rionali in Gesualdo, in the province of Avellino. Available information refers to previous editions, which took place in the month of August with a series of evenings hosted in turn by the different neighborhoods of the Irpinian village.
The established formula includes communal tables set up by the residents of each district, traditional local dishes, music and dancing with the participation of the Carlo Gesualdo Dance School, and all proceeds donated to the activities of the Fratres Gesualdo Sturno Villamaina group. As soon as the 2026 calendar is announced, this page will be updated with dates, neighborhoods, and a detailed program.
Gesualdo is located in upper Irpinia, about thirty kilometers from Avellino. By car, it is easily reached from the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, taking the Grottaminarda exit and following signs for the town. The village is also served by regional bus lines connecting Irpinian towns with Avellino.
The evenings do not have a fixed venue: each dinner is hosted by a different neighborhood or district. The exact location for each evening is announced by the organizers as the event approaches. It is recommended to arrive early, as seating is limited and in high demand.
