Devotion to the martyr in the Sannio village of San Lupo

The Celebrations in honor of Saint Celestine the Martyr are among the most cherished events for the community of San Lupo, a small town in the Province of Benevento, in Campania. The Diocese of Benevento announces them with a sober formula that perfectly captures their essence: the community ยซprepares to experience the solemn liturgical celebrations in honor of Saint Celestine the martyrยป. It is, first and foremost, a religious event, yet as is common in all Sannio villages, it also becomes a moment for the town to reunite: families who have emigrated return, the streets of the center come alive, and the square fills up in the evening.
This should not be confused with the patronal feast: that is dedicated to Saint Lupus of Troyes, the bishop who, according to tradition, stopped Attila and gave the town its name, and it is celebrated at the end of July. The celebrations for Saint Celestine the Martyr are a secondary devotional recurrence, which the community has chosen to preserve by entrusting it to a dedicated committee, the Saint Celestine the Martyr Festival Committee of San Lupo.
With just over 660 inhabitants spread over about 15 square kilometers, San Lupo is one of the smallest municipalities in the Benevento area. The town center sits at 500 meters above sea level, in a territory that drops to 121 meters and rises to 895: a remarkable elevation change that explains the landscape of cultivated hills, forests, and open views of the Sannio mountains.
The historic center revolves around Piazza Umberto I and the parish church of Saint John the Baptist, which houses the bust of the patron saint. In recent years, the village has also become known for the street art murals painted on house walls, which are the subject of guided tours during summer events: an intelligent way, typical of inland areas, to breathe new life into less-frequented streets.
The heart of the festival is the liturgy, celebrated in the parish church with the participation of the entire community. The poster displayed in town remains the reference document for dates, times, and individual appointments: the Diocese of Benevento explicitly refers to it, and at the moment, no detailed version has been released online. Visitors arriving from outside would do well to inquire directly at the parish or the organizing committee.
The Saint Celestine the Martyr Festival Committee is not only active during the days of the festival. In 2025, it collaborated with the San Lupo Pro Loco, the Municipality of San Lupo, and the Lykos Association for the "San Lupo, Sounds and Flavors" event, two evenings in Piazza Umberto I featuring rustic cuisine, a local farmers' market, guided tours of the village and street art, a vintage Volkswagen rally, and concerts of tarantella, pizzica, and tammurriata music. It is a demonstration of how, in these towns, the festival committee, the parish, and local associations are part of a single fabric: the person organizing the procession is often the same one setting up the tables in the square.
Those who want to discover the town can choose from several moments throughout the year:
The festivals in the Sannio villages do not have the theatricality of the large Campania events, and that is precisely why they remain interesting: they are not built for an external audience, but for the community that celebrates them. In San Lupo, one can witness a still-vibrant devotion, listen to the stories of those who guard the town's memory, and dine on dishes prepared the same way for generations. For those traveling in the Sannio area between Guardia Sanframondi, Cerreto Sannita, and Morcone, an evening in San Lupo during the celebrations is an authentic opportunity to encounter inland Campania.
The announcement for the 2026 celebrations comes from the Diocese of Benevento website, which notes that the community of San Lupo is preparing to experience the solemn liturgical celebrations in honor of Saint Celestine the Martyr. The organization is handled by the Saint Celestine the Martyr Festival Committee of San Lupo, in collaboration with the parish of Saint John the Baptist.
At the time of writing this guide, it was not possible to find the detailed program or exact dates online: the diocesan source refers to the poster displayed in town, which is not reproduced on the web. Those wishing to participate are invited to verify the schedule with the organizing committee, the parish, or the Municipality of San Lupo before traveling. We will update this page as soon as the official calendar becomes available.
By car โ San Lupo is located about 30 kilometers from Benevento, in the Titerno area. Take the exit from the SS 372 "Telesina" state road towards Guardia Sanframondi and Cerreto Sannita, then continue on provincial roads until you reach the town. The final climb is scenic but narrow: drive with caution in the evening hours.
By train โ the most convenient stations are Telese Terme-Cerreto Sannita and Benevento; however, from both, it is necessary to continue by car or local bus connections, which are infrequent on holidays.
The historic center is small and partially pedestrianized during events: it is best to leave your car in the spaces at the entrance to the town and walk to Piazza Umberto I and the church of Saint John the Baptist.
For times, programs, and confirmations, you can contact the Saint Celestine the Martyr Festival Committee of San Lupo via their Facebook page, the parish of Saint John the Baptist, or the Municipality of San Lupo switchboard (Via Fontanelle 2, phone +39 0824 811002).
