Three days of horseback riding in the heart of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, featuring trekking, music, and equestrian games.
In the heart of Lunigiana, in the small town of Comano (Massa-Carrara province, Tuscany), Cavalli e Natura is the event that celebrates the bond between horses and the mountains. Organized by the Associazione Allevatori Cavalli Comano in collaboration with the local municipality and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines National Park, the festival transforms the mountain village into a three-day meeting point for riders and nature lovers from Central Tuscany, the province of Lucca, and Emilia.
The core of the event is the horseback trekking: a roughly 20-kilometer loop that winds through the National Park's trails, connecting the Tuscan and Emilian slopes of the Apennines. It is a unique opportunity to rediscover a network of ancient paths immersed in nature, highlighting the mountain trail system and the landscape heritage of one of Central Italy's most evocative inland areas. The starting point is the Centro Fiere Comano Cavalli, the hub for all festival activities.
Cavalli e Natura is about more than just sport and nature: the evenings are dedicated to country music, dancing, and great food. After a day in the saddle, participants gather for convivial dinners, country dance performances, and DJ sets under the stars, in a festive atmosphere that is an integral part of equestrian tourism tradition.
The final day is reserved for equestrian games: skill tests and gymkhanas that involve horses and riders in a program of competitions open to registered participants. It is a spectacular and fun moment that concludes the three-day event, attracting plenty of curious onlookers as well.
Behind the festival lies a concrete goal: to promote equestrian tourism as a driver for development in the inland and mountain areas of the Apennines, showcasing the villages of Lunigiana and their trails. Comano, with its long tradition of horse breeding, is the ideal setting for an event that unites sport, the environment, and local identity.
The second edition of Cavalli e Natura was held in Comano (Massa-Carrara) from May 22 to 24, 2026, reaffirming the formula that led to the success of its debut: three days dedicated to horses and the mountains in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines National Park.
The program confirmed the well-established structure of the event, with riders meeting at the Centro Fiere Comano Cavalli, horseback trekking along the Park's trails, evenings dedicated to country music and dance, and the final day reserved for equestrian games. An appointment that continues to promote Apennine trails and equestrian tourism as an opportunity for development in the inland areas of Lunigiana.
The program follows the documented structure of the festival; detailed timings were communicated by the organization closer to the event date.
Comano is located in the Lunigiana Apennines, in the province of Massa-Carrara. By car, it can be reached via the A15 motorway (Parma-La Spezia, Aulla exit) or the A1 (Aulla/Lunigiana exit), continuing inland along the valley roads. The reference point is the Centro Fiere Comano Cavalli.
Participation in the trekking and equestrian games requires prior registration (with the horse's health certificate). Covered areas for horses are provided, along with camping options and affiliated accommodation facilities in the area. The event is open to the public to watch the activities.
