The youth festival in the historic center of the Sannio village
CautanoFest is the summer event in Cautano, a town of just under two thousand inhabitants in the province of Benevento, in the heart of inland Campania. It is organized by the Cautano Youth Forum, the municipality's youth participation body: it is the local girls and boys who build the program, set up the stations, and manage the streets during the evenings. Born in 2025, the festival reached its second edition in 2026, a sign that the idea worked and has since become a highly anticipated appointment.
The stage is the historic center: Piazza Vittorio Veneto and Via Roma are closed to traffic for the occasion, as established by municipal ordinance no. 16 of July 20, 2026. This is the most recognizable hallmark of CautanoFest: not a fenced-off area on the outskirts of town, but the everyday streets and squares that, after sunset, fill with stages, stalls, lights, and people. The village of Cautano, with its nine hamlets scattered on the mountain slopes, regains for a few days the density and noise of a small city.
The formula is deliberately multidisciplinary and designed not to exclude any age group. According to what was communicated by the organizers and reported by the local Sannio press, the festival route includes:
The detailed program for each evening, with the names of musical guests, is released by the Youth Forum on their social channels a few days before the event and is not available in a fixed form online: those who want to plan ahead can refer to the official hours, from 6:00 PM to 1:00 AM.
The second edition opened on Friday, July 24, 2026, and continued on Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th, every evening from 6:00 PM to 1:00 AM in the historic center. The final day was then postponed to Saturday, August 1, 2026, with Piazza Vittorio Veneto closed to traffic from 5:00 PM to 1:00 AM (municipal ordinance no. 18 of July 28, 2026). Anyone in the Sannio region that weekend therefore still has a chance to experience the festival.
Cautano lies at about 300 meters above sea level on the slopes of the Taburno massif, about fifteen kilometers from Benevento and less than eighty from Naples. The municipal territory borders Vitulano, Foglianise, Tocco Caudio, Campoli del Monte Taburno, and Frasso Telesino, in that Vitulanese Valley that rises towards the Taburno-Camposauro Regional Park: a land of vineyards, olive groves, historic marble quarries, and mountain trails, where summer festivals have always marked the community calendar.
CautanoFest fits into this tradition but interprets it in a contemporary key. It is not a food festival dedicated to a typical product nor a patronal feast: it is a youth festival that uses today's tools โ music, sports, visual arts, games โ to respond to a very concrete problem of the Campanian Apennine villages, depopulation and the departure of young people towards the cities.
Those who arrive in Cautano these days find what is hard to encounter in large festivals: an event tailored to the village, where those who play, cook, and welcome come from the same place, and where the audience is composed as much of teenagers as of families and elderly people sitting on chairs in front of their homes. It is also a good excuse to discover the Benevento side of the Taburno, its wines, and its cuisine, a short distance from the most beaten paths of Campania.
The countdown began at the end of May 2026, when the Cautano Youth Forum announced the dates of the second edition: from July 24 to 26, in the historic center of the Sannio municipality. The announcement spoke of ยซthree days dedicated to people, the territory, and the communityยป, with the declared goal of transforming the village once again into a place of gathering, celebration, and sharing.
The Municipality of Cautano accompanied the event with ordinance no. 16 of July 20, 2026, which ordered the closure to traffic and the parking ban in Piazza Vittorio Veneto and Via Roma during the three evenings, from 6:00 PM to 1:00 AM. A second ordinance, no. 18 of July 28, then ordered the postponement of the final day to Saturday, August 1, 2026, with the square closed from 5:00 PM to 1:00 AM.
The 2026 formula combined live music, sports, shows, dance, theater, tournaments, street art, and games, enriched by exhibitors, an escape room, and a food & drink area spread along the festival route. A setup designed to allow different audiences to coexist in the same space, from the youngest to the families of the village.
The detailed program with the names of musical guests for each evening was not released in a fixed form online: it is published by the Cautano Youth Forum on its channels in the days immediately preceding the festival.
Historic center of Cautano (BN), Campania: Piazza Vittorio Veneto and Via Roma, closed to traffic during the event.
By car from Benevento, it is about 15 km in the direction of the Vitulanese Valley; from Naples, the route is about 80 km towards the Sannio region. The nearest train station is in Benevento, from which you can continue by car or by bus connections towards Vitulano and Cautano.
Since the streets of the center are closed to traffic during the festival hours, it is advisable to leave the car along the roads leading to the village and reach the square on foot.
Evenings from 6:00 PM to 1:00 AM; the final day of Saturday, August 1, 2026, starts at 5:00 PM and ends at 1:00 AM.
There are no official communications regarding tickets or entry fees; food & drink consumption is naturally paid for.
