When Caneva Castle Returns to the Middle Ages

Perched on the first foothills of the Pordenone area, Caneva Castle overlooks the town and the plain below. Every year, at the beginning of summer, this historic site becomes the stage for Castello in Festa, one of the most cherished and long-standing medieval historical re-enactments in Friuli Venezia Giulia, capable of transporting the entire community back in time.

Re-enactors, Ancient Crafts, and the Palio dei Borghi

The event stages a complete re-enactment with costumed re-enactors from the period. The medieval days bring the village to life with artisans demonstrating ancient crafts, theatrical performances, musicians, and jesters. The heart of the challenge between the districts is the Palio dei Borghi, a test of strength and skill that ignites competition and cheers from the districts.

The Castle Fire and Fire Games

The most spectacular moment is the "Notturno Castellano" (Castle Night), featuring the castle fire: a pyrotechnic display that illuminates the castle at night, accompanied by fire games and concerts. It is the iconic image of the festival, eagerly awaited by thousands of visitors who come to Caneva every year to witness it.

The Figo Moro and Local Flavours

Castello in Festa is also a tribute to local products. The absolute star is the Figo Moro da Caneva, the local black fig protected as a Slow Food presidium and De.Co. (Denominazione Comunale), celebrated along with Caneva wines and traditional dishes at the "Banchetto Medievale" (Medieval Banquet) and in the food stalls. Organized by the Associazione Pro Castello, the event also offers an artisan market, guided tours, activities for children, and a shuttle service, in a festival that combines history, culture, and taste.
