Every winter, the historic center of Castelnuovo di Porto, in the province of Rome, turns into an open-air stage for its Carnival, the most colorful and popular masked festival of the year. Organized by the Pro Loco with the support of the Municipality, the event brings together locals and visitors for a grand masked parade that winds through the town's streets, culminating in Piazza Gavioli, the beating heart of the festivities.
Castelnuovo di Porto is a picturesque village in the Tiber Valley, dominated by the Rocca Colonna and located just a few kilometers from the capital along the Via Flaminia. During Carnival, its medieval streets become the perfect backdrop for a community celebration: confetti and streamers fill the alleys, music accompanies the performers, and the atmosphere captures the genuine, convivial spirit of Lazio's village festivals.
The highlight is the masked parade: costumed groups, allegorical floats, and children in fancy dress make their way through the historic center amidst music, dancing, and choreography. Each edition brings new themes and characters inspired by beloved fairy tales and cartoons, creating a festive journey that involves entire families and local associations.
The Castelnuovo di Porto Carnival is designed especially for children: alongside the parade, there is entertainment, music, and a food area serving Carnival sweets and street food. It is a day dedicated to fun, where the popular tradition of the masked festival is renewed, bringing the whole community together.
As in many towns in Lazio, Carnival in Castelnuovo di Porto is a strong identity-defining moment, uniting residents and visitors around an ancient custom of masks, colors, and joy. The festival is part of the rich calendar of events that animate the village throughout the year, from markets to food festivals, and offers a wonderful opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the Roman countryside.
The 2026 edition of the Castelnuovo di Porto Carnival was held in February, bringing the customary masked celebration back to the historic center of the Roman village. As per tradition, the event promoted by the Pro Loco featured a parade of masked groups and floats, with confetti, music, and entertainment for children.
The Carnival confirms its role as an identity-defining event for the community of Castelnuovo di Porto, in Lazio, capable of bringing residents and visitors together for a day of outdoor celebration. For details on the route and side events, please refer to the official channels of the Pro Loco and the Municipality.
