The challenge between the eight districts in the heart of the Florentine Valdelsa
The Castelfiorentino Palio is one of the most cherished events in the summer calendar of the Florentine Valdelsa. For an entire weekend, the town of Castelfiorentino, in the province of Florence and in the heart of Tuscany, comes alive with the friendly rivalry of its eight districts: Borgo, Cambiano, Dogana, Puppino, Praticelli, Ferruzzino, Membrino, and Santa Verdiana. More than just a competition, the Palio is an opportunity to strengthen community bonds, celebrate the identity of the districts, and enjoy the town squares through play and participation.
The event spans three days, each with its own highlight. It opens on Friday evening with the inaugural parade of all the districts, which travels from the center to the Municipal Stadium, kicking off the children's Palio, reserved for the little ones. Saturday evening is dedicated to theatrical performances: each district stages a spectacular interpretation in Piazza Kennedy based on the theme chosen for that year. Sunday is the decisive day, with competitions at the stadium in the morning and final games in the afternoon, culminating in the proclamation of the winning district.
The program offers a series of trials that test the ingenuity, strength, and skill of the participants. Among the most anticipated challenges are:
At the end of the competitions, the Cencio is awarded—the banner that rewards the winning district: a symbolic trophy, often created by local school students, which becomes the pride of the district for the entire year.
The eight districts of Castelfiorentino animate city life well beyond the days of the Palio, with headquarters, colors, and fan bases that prepare all year round. The rivalry that ignites during the event reflects a strong sense of belonging that spans generations, making the Palio an identity-defining appointment for the entire Valdelsa community.
Included in the rich landscape of festivals and re-enactments in Tuscany, the Castelfiorentino Palio offers visitors the chance to discover the authenticity of a town that lives its traditions with passion. The crowded squares, evening lights, theatrical shows, and the enthusiasm of the participants create an engaging atmosphere, perfect for those seeking a popular event far from the major tourist circuits, yet deeply rooted in local culture.
The 2026 Castelfiorentino Palio had the theme "Stages of History" as its common thread, with the eight districts committed to representing different eras: Borgo (Prehistory), Cambiano (Ancient Egypt), Dogana (Ancient Greece), Puppino (Roman Empire), Praticelli (Middle Ages), Ferruzzino (Renaissance), Membrino (Industrial Revolution), and Santa Verdiana (Imperialism).
Friday, June 12th (8:00 PM) the inaugural parade led the districts from Piazza Kennedy to the Municipal Stadium for the Children's Palio (ages 6-15) with the games "Sponge Squeeze", "Aim and Shoot", and the "Relay Race". Saturday, June 13th (8:45 PM) Piazza Kennedy hosted the historical-themed theatrical performances. Sunday, June 14th, from 9:00 AM at the Riccardo Neri Stadium, the "Relay Race" and "Tug of War" were held, while at 4:00 PM the games continued in Piazza Kennedy with "Dodgeball" and "Ruzzola Balla", until the proclamation of the winning district and the awarding of the Cencio.
