A day among the excellent labels of Oltrepò Pavese
The Casteggio Wine Festival was born from a simple idea: to bring wine out of the cellars and put it directly into the hands of those who drink it. For one Sunday, Via Roma in the center of Casteggio, in the Province of Pavia, becomes an outdoor tasting route where producers from Oltrepò Pavese tell their stories firsthand.
Oltrepò Pavese is one of the most important wine-growing areas in Lombardy: hills cultivated with vines that give life to distinctive labels such as Pinot Nero (also in the classic method sparkling version here), Barbera, Bonarda, Croatina, and Riesling. The festival is promoted by the Gruppo Cantine di Eccellenza Viticola dell'Oltrepò Pavese, in collaboration with Pensare Vino, and focuses on small realities that work with artisanal care.
Admission to the event is free: you can wander freely among the stands set up along the street. To taste, simply purchase the tasting kit with a glass, which starts your journey among the wineries. It's the perfect opportunity to stock up on hard-to-find bottles and to ask winemakers for details not found on the label: the vineyard, the vintage, the production process.
More than just a fair, the Casteggio Wine Festival is a small journey into the taste of Oltrepò. Meeting producers, understanding the difference between a wine made with patience and an industrial one, discovering niche labels: it's an experience that speaks to those who truly love wine, but also to those who want to start understanding it. And all this in Casteggio, one of the historic capitals of Pavia viticulture.
For the 2026 edition, Via Roma in Casteggio comes alive from morning to evening with stands from Oltrepò Pavese wineries. Visitors can taste selected regional wines, meet producers directly, discover rare and little-distributed labels, and understand the differences between artisanal and industrial production. The symbolic grape varieties of the area take center stage: Pinot Nero, Barbera, Bonarda, Croatina, and Riesling.
