Confetti, costumes, and music at the Multi-Purpose Center of this Irpinian village
In the villages of Irpinia, Carnival is rarely about monumental floats; it is a community celebration that unfolds over a single evening, bringing the entire town together in one space. The Carnival Masquerade Party in Torre Le Nocelle, promoted by the Municipality in the province of Avellino, belongs to this tradition: no spectacular pretensions, just an afternoon and evening where the Multi-Purpose Center fills with masks, confetti, and music.
The organizers describe it as «an occasion designed for all ages, where colors, smiles, and music are the true protagonists». It is a deliberately simple formula that asks nothing of participants other than to dress up and show up: admission is free and the party is open to anyone who wishes to join.
The heart of the event is the little ones. They are the ones parading between the tables in homemade or store-bought costumes, throwing confetti, and being the first to dance when the music starts. Recent editions have been specifically promoted with an invitation to the village children, but the party has progressively expanded: today, teenagers, parents, grandparents, and groups of costumed adults also participate.
This intergenerational dimension is what makes the event significant in a town of just over 1,200 inhabitants. In a village of this size, an evening like this is not just an event on the calendar: it is the calendar. And the Multi-Purpose Center, the municipal hall on Via Beniamino Rotondi, becomes the village's indoor square for the night.
Torre Le Nocelle sits at an altitude of 420 meters, about twenty kilometers from Avellino, in the Calore Valley: a stretch of Irpinian hills nestled between Aglianico and Greco vineyards, where villages follow one another at short distances. The patron saint is San Ciriaco, celebrated on March 16 and August 8, and the local calendar includes other cherished moments, such as the bonfire night linked to the March anniversary.
Carnival fits into this network of events as the first major collective moment of the year, breaking the winter before Lent. Those visiting Irpinia during this period will find a territory less touched by mass tourism, with open wineries, quiet villages, and seasonal gastronomy that, throughout Campania, is enriched during Carnival with traditional fried sweets like chiacchiere and sanguinaccio.
The province of Avellino maintains a Carnival of two speeds. On one hand, there are the great ritual traditions, with zeze, masked songs, and village begging rituals that survive in some municipalities. On the other, there are contemporary masquerade parties organized by municipalities, parishes, or associations in multi-purpose halls: this is the formula chosen by Torre Le Nocelle and dozens of other Irpinian centers, responding to a very practical need—giving children a safe, indoor Carnival in the heart of the Apennine winter.
The result is an event that does not appear in tourist guides but, for those who experience it, is one of the most identity-defining moments of the year. Visitors from outside will find the typical hospitality of small Irpinian towns: you walk in, you mingle, and in no time, you are no longer a guest.
The party is held during the Carnival days, between late February and early March depending on the liturgical calendar, generally in the afternoon or evening. The 2026 edition took place on Tuesday, February 17, on Shrove Tuesday, starting at 6:00 PM. The exact date is announced year by year by the Municipality on official channels and the municipal Facebook page, usually a few weeks in advance.
The 2026 Carnival Masquerade Party in Torre Le Nocelle was held on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, coinciding with Shrove Tuesday, the last day of Carnival before Lent. The event, organized by the Municipality of Torre Le Nocelle in the province of Avellino, took place starting at 6:00 PM at the Multi-Purpose Center at Via Beniamino Rotondi 50.
The Municipality presented the evening as «an occasion designed for all ages, where colors, smiles, and music will be the true protagonists», inviting citizens to participate in costume. Admission was free, with no reservation required, in line with the tradition of a party born as a community moment open to everyone: children, families, youth, and adults.
The Municipality did not release a detailed hourly schedule of individual activities or a closing time: the official announcement indicated the start time, location, and free access.
Torre Le Nocelle can be reached by car: the village is about 24 km from Avellino and is connected to the provincial road network of the Calore Valley. The Multi-Purpose Center, the venue for the party, is located at Via Beniamino Rotondi 50, in the town center. There are no direct train connections: the reference stations remain those of the Avellino and Benevento area, from which it is necessary to continue by car.
Admission is free, with no reservation or registration required. The party is open to children, families, and adults in costume.
As this is an indoor party in the middle of the Apennine winter, it is advisable to wear appropriate clothing for evening travel: at an altitude of 420 meters, February temperatures can be cold. Visitors from outside can combine the visit with the nearby villages of the Calore Valley and the wineries of the Taurasi area.
