The durantino Carnival with fritters, crostoli and masks in Piazza San Cristoforo
The Carnival in the Square in Urbania is the festival with which the Pro Loco Casteldurante enlivens the historic center of ancient Casteldurante, today the Municipality of Urbania, in the Alta Val Metauro in the province of Pesaro and Urbino, in the Marche region. It is not a grand carnival with allegorical floats and spectacular parades, but an authentic village festival, made of colors, masks, music, and above all, the typical sweets of the durantino tradition. It is the time when the community gathers in the squares to celebrate together, young and old.
The festival is divided into two distinct moments. The first takes place in Piazza San Cristoforo, Urbania's main square, with a party open to everyone, cheerful and colorful, enlivened by fritters and crostoli prepared by the Pro Loco Casteldurante. The second event is the masked party at the Oratorio San Domenico Savio, designed especially for children, with entertainment, games, and costumes.
The sweet heart of the festival are the fried sweets that have always accompanied the carnival period in Urbania. The fritters and crostoli distributed by the Pro Loco recall a deep-rooted gastronomic tradition: the durantino crostolo is a typical recognized product of the territory, a pastry made and cooked according to ancient family recipes. Tasting them in the square, still warm, is one of the most cherished pleasures of Carnival in Casteldurante.
Carnival in the Square is above all an event for families. Children are the real protagonists, with masks and costumes that fill Piazza San Cristoforo and the Oratorio San Domenico Savio with color. Free admission and the informal atmosphere make the event a beloved appointment for the people of Urbania and for those who visit Urbania during this time of year.
Urbania is a town that intensely experiences traditional festivals: in addition to Carnival, it is famous throughout Italy for the National Befana Festival and the summer Crostolo Festival. Carnival in the Square is part of this calendar of popular events organized by the Pro Loco Casteldurante, confirming Urbania as one of the most vibrant destinations in the Marche hinterland for those seeking tradition, gastronomy, and an authentic atmosphere.
