The historic carnival of Orbetello featuring allegorical floats, beauty queens, and a spectacular night-time finale on the lagoon
The Carnevaletto da 3 Soldi is the grand popular festival of Orbetello, a town overlooking the picturesque lagoon in the province of Grosseto, in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma. Established in the early 1970s, its quirky and irreverent name stems from the idea of a carnival made "with three coins"โmeaning with limited resources but boundless imagination, passion, and community spirit. For over half a century, this event has been one of southern Tuscany's most beloved traditions, drawing thousands of spectators to Corso Italia.
The heart of the festival lies in its five allegorical floats, authentic papier-mรขchรฉ masterpieces built in the months leading up to the event by the various districts of the municipality: Orbetello Centro, Neghelli, Stazione, Fonteblanda, and Albinia. Each float explores a different theme, often satirical and tied to current events, accompanied by at least one marching band and masked groups dancing along the route. It is a well-established formula that guarantees a spectacle of music, color, and joy, born from the volunteer efforts of entire families: grandfathers recount their first float, fathers work on the structure today, and children wait to see the magic come to life in the square.
The Carnevaletto tradition includes the presence of King Carnival, who kicks off the festivities with his proclamation from the stage in Piazza Eroe dei Due Mondi, and the election of the Carnival Queen, chosen from the district representatives during the parades. There are also side events dedicated to children, with parties and costume awards, confirming the family-friendly and intergenerational nature of the festival.
What makes the Carnevaletto da 3 Soldi unique is its setting: the Orbetello Lagoon observes and reflects the colors of the festival, while the streets of the historic center become an open-air stage. The grand night-time finale, with illuminated floats parading through the dark, is the most emotional and anticipated moment of the entire edition. The festival embraces the entire municipality, from Fonteblanda to Neghelli, passing through Albinia and Stazione, testifying to its deep roots in the Maremma community.
The 55th edition of the Carnevaletto da 3 Soldi celebrated 55 years of a beloved tradition in Orbetello. The opening, initially set for February 8, was postponed due to rain forecasts: the festival officially kicked off on February 15 with the proclamation of King Carnival and the first masked parade.
The five districts presented allegorical floats with original themes: Orbetello Centro with artificial intelligence ("A.i, A.i, A.i โ the future has gone mad"), the Albinia group with "The Last Guardian", Fonteblanda with a subject inspired by Dante ("Damned Modern Times"), Neghelli with "The Mirror of Vanity", and Stazione with "Revolucion", dedicated to music.
The parades continued on February 22 and March 1, leading up to the grand night-time finale on March 7, with illuminated floats along Corso Italia. The event was organized by the Carnevaletto da 3 Soldi Association in collaboration with the Municipality of Orbetello.
Participating floats: Orbetello Centro ("A.i, A.i, A.i โ the future has gone mad"), Albinia ("The Last Guardian"), Fonteblanda ("Damned Modern Times"), Neghelli ("The Mirror of Vanity"), Stazione ("Revolucion").
Orbetello can be reached by car via the SS1 Aurelia, taking the Orbetello exit. By train, the reference station is Orbetello-Monte Argentario, on the Rome-Genoa Tyrrhenian line, just a few minutes from the center.
Admission to the afternoon masked parades costs 6 euros, with free entry for children up to 12 years old. The grand night-time finale is free to attend.
The parades take place along Corso Italia: it is advisable to arrive early to secure a spot. Since it takes place in February-March, warm clothing is recommended, especially for the evening finale.
