The longest-running literary festival in the Caserta area, featuring books, podcasts, and music at the Museo Campano
Capua il Luogo della Lingua Festival is the longest-running literary event in the province of Caserta and a key cultural milestone in inland Campania. Founded in 2006 and directed since its inception by Giuseppe Bellone, the festival has turned the city of Capua, on the banks of the Volturno river, into a permanent laboratory dedicated to the word in all its forms: books, journalism, poetry, podcasts, and singer-songwriter music.
The heart of the event lies in exploring the languages of contemporary culture: alongside book presentations and author talks, the program features live podcast recordings, musical showcases, and meetings with prominent national journalists. Over the years, the festival has hosted writers, screenwriters, archaeologists, radio hosts, and television personalities, balancing literary reflection with live performances.
Events take place in iconic locations within Capua's historic center. The Museo Provinciale Campano, one of the most important museums in the region housing the famous Matres Matutae, hosts the main meetings and concerts in its monumental courtyard; the Circolo dei Lettori and local bookstores host presentations and podcast recordings, fostering a constant dialogue between historical heritage and contemporary creativity.
Promoted by the City of Capua in partnership with the Architempo association, the festival is part of the Pact for Reading — Capua City of Readers program and collaborates with local schools, the Center for Books and Reading, and local associations. The festival particularly engages young people, encouraging them to become active participants through workshops, readings, and projects dedicated to promoting literacy.
Spanning several weeks between May and June, the festival transforms Capua into a widespread stage that celebrates the territory's Mediterranean identity and strengthens the bond between the community and culture. With free admission to almost all events, the festival is now a landmark for readers, enthusiasts, and curious minds from across the province of Caserta and the Campania region.
The twenty-first edition of the festival, promoted by the City of Capua and directed by Giuseppe Bellone, focused on the themes of memory, introspection, and Mediterranean identity, explored through literature, podcasts, and live music. The program spanned several weeks, from late May to mid-June, with the Museo Provinciale Campano serving as the central venue.
Guests included actor and director Marco D'Amore, writer Lorenzo Marone with his Manuale pratico di smarrimento, writer Wanda Marasco (winner of the 2025 Campiello Prize), as well as Maria Grazia Calandrone, Carmen Verde, Monica Acito, archaeologist Paolo Giulierini, writer Maurizio De Giovanni, and radio host Paoletta from Radio Italia.
The 21st edition opened in May with an inaugural meeting dedicated to Ivan Cotroneo at the Circolo dei Lettori, continuing with events in late May and a dense program in June at the Museo Campano.
Capua is located in the province of Caserta, along the Volturno river. By car, it is accessible via the A1 motorway (Capua exit) and the A30. By train, the Capua station is served by the Naples–Cassino regional line; the journey from Naples takes about an hour.
Events are held primarily at the Museo Provinciale Campano and the Circolo dei Lettori in the historic center. Some events require booking.
Most meetings are free to attend, with booking recommended for some.
