Great cinema under the stars in the Giardini dello Sperone
The Capua Film Fest is the film festival that brings one of the most evocative spots in the town of Capua, in the province of Caserta, to life every summer: the Giardini dello Sperone, the green area at the foot of the ancient defensive bastion. For two weeks in July, this historic setting turns into an open-air arena where the big screen engages with the audience under the stars, making it one of the most vibrant cultural offerings of the summer in Campania.
The festival is promoted and organized by the Teatro Ricciardi, a historic Capuan cultural institution, conceived by Gianmaria Modugno and artistically directed by Francesco Massarelli. The stated goal is twofold: to bring quality cinema to Capua—including debut works, cult films, and national premieres—and simultaneously establish the city as a cultural and tourist hub for the entire Caserta region.
What sets the Capua Film Fest apart is the direct connection between the audience and the people who actually make the films. Every evening features meetings with directors, actors, and industry professionals who present their work and share behind-the-scenes stories. Alongside the screenings, the event offers musical interludes, tributes to the great masters, and cult nights dedicated to titles that have made cinema history.
Admission to all screenings is free, a choice that makes the festival a popular and inclusive event. The Giardini dello Sperone also hosts food and wine stalls, selected food trucks, and premium exhibitors, as well as spaces and activities designed for families and children. The result is a widespread celebration that blends culture, taste, and conviviality.
An art city nestled on the bend of the Volturno River, Capua preserves a historical heritage rooted in the Roman and Lombard eras. The Capua Film Fest fits into this context by enhancing the city's public spaces and transforming them into places for gathering and cultural regeneration, in a constant dialogue between the memory of the site and the contemporary language of cinema.
The fifth edition of the Capua Film Fest focuses on women's cinema with the theme "Feminine: Gazes and Portraits." The program is divided into two sections: Gazes, dedicated to works by female directors, and Portraits, focusing on the great female figures who have left their mark on the history of the big screen. Announced guests include Vanessa Scalera, Anna Ferzetti, Teresa Saponangelo, and Michela Andreozzi.
There are numerous special events: the tribute to Elvira Notari, a pioneer of Neapolitan cinema, on the 150th anniversary of her birth, and the "Cult Night" celebrating the centenary of Marilyn Monroe. There will also be cult screenings, live musical moments, and a space dedicated to young directors. Admission to all screenings is free.
The Giardini dello Sperone are located in the historic center of Capua (CE), along Via Pomerio. By car: take the Capua exit on the A1 Milan-Naples motorway, just a few minutes from the center. By train: Capua station on the regional line, followed by a short walk.
Access to all screenings and meetings is free, subject to availability. We recommend arriving early on evenings with special guests.
