The end-of-year concert at the Tempio della Maddalena, blending classical music with Viennese tradition
In the heart of the Prenestini Mountains, just a few kilometres from Palestrina and Rome, the small village of Capranica Prenestina concludes its annual calendar with a beloved tradition: the New Year's Concert, hosted in the evocative setting of the Tempio della Maddalena. Supported and promoted by the local parish community, the event has evolved over the years into a cultural and social cornerstone for the entire village, drawing audiences from across the province of Rome.
The musical heart of the event is the Orchestra Artemus, an ensemble founded in 2017 with a commitment to high-quality classical music. Their presence in Capranica Prenestina is renewed each season, bringing a repertoire to the Tempio della Maddalena specifically curated for the festive Christmas period and the turn of the year.
The concert is structured as a multi-stage journey. It begins with the great Italian string repertoire, featuring works by composers such as Vivaldi, Corelli, and Respighi, before moving on to traditional Christmas pieces. The grand finale is dedicated to the famous music of the Strauss family, in keeping with the classic Viennese New Year's concert tradition: waltzes and polkas that usher the audience into the new year in a festive spirit.
The choice of venue is no coincidence. The Tempio della Maddalena, a place of worship and identity for the local community, offers acoustics and an intimate atmosphere that enhance the concert, blending the spiritual dimension with the musical one. The initiative is part of a broader calendar of Christmas events promoted in the village, which includes exhibitions and other musical moments during the weeks between Christmas and Epiphany.
The Capranica Prenestina New Year's Concert is free to attend, reflecting its mission as a community event open to both residents and visitors. It is an ideal opportunity to discover an authentic village in Lazio, set high in the Prenestini Mountains, and to enjoy the holiday spirit with excellent live music.
To welcome the new year, the Tempio della Maddalena in Capranica Prenestina hosted the end-of-year concert titled 'New Year 2026', scheduled for Monday, December 29, 2025, at 6:30 PM. On stage, the Orchestra Artemus presented a musical journey in three parts: works from the great Italian string repertoire (Vivaldi, Corelli, Respighi), traditional Christmas pieces, and finally, the famous music of the Strauss family, following the Viennese tradition of New Year's concerts. The event, with free admission, was part of the village's rich calendar of Christmas festivities.
Capranica Prenestina is located in the Prenestini Mountains, in the province of Rome. By car, it can be reached via the A24 motorway (Tivoli exit) or the Via Prenestina, passing through Palestrina and winding up towards the village. The Tempio della Maddalena is located in the town centre.
Admission to the concert is free. For information and reservations, please contact the organisers at [email protected].
As this is a winter event in a mountain village, warm clothing is recommended. The concert takes place indoors at the Tempio della Maddalena.
