Three days of masks, floats, and music on Lake Maggiore
Every winter, the village of Cannobio, overlooking the Piedmontese shore of Lake Maggiore in the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, transforms into a riot of colors, confetti, and masks. The Cannobio Carnival (Cannobiese Carnival) is a popular event deeply rooted in tradition, organized by the Cannobio Carnival Association with the support of the Municipality of Cannobio.
A unique feature of this festival is that it follows the Ambrosian rite: for this reason, the Cannobiese carnival is celebrated a few days later than the Roman carnival, extending the mask season on the lake. It is a trait that links Cannobio to the Lombard and Milanese tradition, despite being located in Piedmontese territory.
The program is spread over three days packed with events designed for families, children, and music lovers:
There is no Cannobiese festival without the traditional dishes served at the Oratorio Don Silvio Gallotti: tripe on Thursday, polenta and tapelucco on Friday, and risotto with luganiga sausage on Saturday. These are moments of conviviality that bring the entire Cannobio community together around great local cuisine.
Attending the carnival is also the perfect opportunity to visit one of the most charming villages on Lake Maggiore, with its lakefront, medieval historic center, and the authentic atmosphere of a town that embraces the festival with great enthusiasm. An unmissable stop for those seeking the living traditions of the Piedmontese lakes.
Cannobio is located on the Piedmontese shore of Lake Maggiore, in the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola. By car, it can be reached via the SS34 Lake Maggiore road. By train, the nearest station is Verbania-Pallanza, which is connected to Cannobio by bus; alternatively, you can arrive by ferry from the main lake ports.
Daytime parades and events in the square are free. Musical evenings at the Palacarnevale require a ticket (generally between 15 and 20 euros depending on the evening).
Dress up in a costume to fully experience the atmosphere, and book your accommodation in advance: the village is very popular during the carnival.
