Shrove Tuesday with masks and floats in the heart of the Cilento region
In Cannalonga, a village of just under a thousand inhabitants perched at an altitude of 530 meters in the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, the Carnival is much more than just a brief moment of fun: it is the time when the entire community gathers in the square after the coldest months of the year. The event traditionally centers on Shrove Tuesday, the final day of the carnival season, and involves all generations of the town, from school children to groups of adults who spend weeks working on costumes and floats.
The meeting point is set for the afternoon in the square, the civic heart of the town of Cannalonga: this is where individual masks, masked groups, and the allegorical floats prepared over the previous weeks gather. From there, the parade takes shape, winding through the streets of the town center amidst music, confetti, and streamers. It is a parade on a human scale, without barriers or grandstands: spectators almost always end up becoming part of the event, and it is precisely this participatory dimension that distinguishes the carnivals of small Campanian villages from large city parades.
The day concludes indoors at the Sala Sociale, where the masks and floats judged to be the most beautiful are awarded. This is the most anticipated moment, where the craftsmanship of the groups is recognized: papier-mรขchรฉ, fabrics, decorations, and satirical inventions often built in the town's garages and cellars. The awards ceremony also becomes an opportunity for a final social gathering, featuring music and traditional seasonal sweets.
The organization is entrusted to the Pro Loco dei Laghi, a non-profit association active in Cannalonga since 1980, which defines itself as a group of young people who love their territory and are committed to defending local Cilento traditions. The Carnival is one of the fixed appointments on its annual calendar, alongside the Midsummer Nights in July, the Palio dell'Assunta, Christmas markets, New Year's Eve, and the Cannalonghese Theater festivals. It is volunteer work that keeps the cultural agenda of a small but lively town alive.
Located in the province of Salerno, a few kilometers from Vallo della Lucania, Cannalonga is one of those towns in the Cilento interior that preserves the rhythm of the seasons and festivals intact. Campania is a region where Carnival has deep roots and takes on very different forms from town to town: the Cannalonga version belongs to the family of popular village carnivals, where the value lies not in the size of the event, but in its ability to bring an entire community together.
Those in the Cilento region during this period can easily combine the day with a visit to the surrounding area, among the hillside villages of Vallo della Lucania and the protected landscapes of the Park: the Cannalonga Carnival is an excellent gateway to the real life of this part of Campania.
In the calendar of carnivals in the Salerno area, Cannalonga chose the classic date of Shrove Tuesday, February 17, for 2026. The afternoon began with the gathering in the square at 3:00 PM, the meeting point for individual masks, groups, and allegorical floats prepared in the preceding weeks.
From the square, the parade set off through the town center, with music and confetti, in one of the most well-attended days of the year for this small town in the Cilento National Park. The closing took place indoors at the Sala Sociale, the venue for the awards ceremony for the masks and floats judged to be the most beautiful.
The event was part of the busy carnival calendar that animates the Cilento and the entire province of Salerno every year, where dozens of towns celebrate on the same afternoon with processions, masks, and awards.
Cannalonga is located in the Cilento interior, in the province of Salerno, a few kilometers from Vallo della Lucania, the main reference center for the area. It is easily reached by car via the provincial roads that connect the villages of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. The town is at an altitude of 530 meters: warm clothing is recommended in February.
The gathering takes place in the square in the center of the town; the parade travels through the streets of the town center, and the awards ceremony is held at the Sala Sociale. Distances are minimal and everything is walkable.
The program for each edition is released by the Pro Loco dei Laghi through their website and social media channels (Facebook and Instagram), usually in the weeks leading up to Shrove Tuesday. The local Cilento press publishes the complete calendar of regional carnivals every year.
